I used to be big into slasher movies, oddly enough. The problem with me now is that it's hard to get into horror because a lot of horror films go primarily for cheap jump scares, which are just bad for my health. :(

Being as this is an AVN, and it's female protagonist, I may try to find time to actually play a game...

I used to be big into slasher movies, oddly enough. The problem with me now is that it's hard to get into horror because a lot of horror films go primarily for cheap jump scares, which are just bad for my health. :(

Being as this is an AVN, and it's female protagonist, I may try to find time to actually play a game...
I am a massive horror fan. Grew up with the slashers of the 80s, even some horrors from the 60s and 70s. Too many movies to name, especially slashers that I love, I imagine a lot of them you know, especially if you used to be a big fan of them? Scream is of course, my all time favourite, especially for it's nods of homage towards other classics. Some of those older movies, especially when I was growing up scared the shite out of me...:p They have the rare good taste and timed jump scare here and there, but nothing overdramatic... so yes, I may have one or two jump scares where appropriate for atmosphere, but no, not like the newer movies and be overkill (20-30 jump scares in a 80-90 minute movie).

The problem with newer horror movies, is that by doing quick jump scares one after another it ruins the "tension". If you've never seen a horror movie before, or are a novice at the genre then a movie like Insidious or the Conjuring will be pure nightmare fuel... the key to a horror, especially a psychological one is to play on your emotions and like a rollercoaster slowly build up that anticipation, slowly get your skin crawling in goosebumps, have you on the edge of your seat, concerned for the protag, as well as the surrounding cast. Then let the rollercoaster fall, before slowly building that tension up again (not quickly having the drop one after another). In the case of a slasher movie it's a given what happens in that genre, one way or another, but you want to be on the edge of your seat, because you're tensed for their survival... that is fear, vs constant jump scares.

The traditional and classic horror movies, and the 80s slashers were more about suspense, vs screams.

Without going into spoilers, I want the player to be in the shoes of the protag .. they're no super human, they're human, a normal young women, who if it came to a life and death situation is equally vulnerable just like everyone else at camp. I want the player to enjoy the innocent nature, as well as the dramas of being at an all-girl summer camp (as you'd expect in a slasher movie), before the clock chimes for the death happy hour. At that point, the gloves come off and you'd be in for the ride or more appropriately the run of your life? At that point I'd want you to feel tense, because it really will be the question of... will you survive and will anyone else?

So, those 80s slasher and psychological movies whilst I do my own thing, are and will be a huge influence on how I shape my game as a horror. And the upcoming chapter 2 that I'm working on (the third release) I have two nice horror themed scenes in, so perhaps give it a try then?. ;)

For what SakuraBlossomGames has writtenm, it seems that the MC could die.
And that we would have to make rough and quick choices.
So I suppose there will be several endings.

Thank you for taking the time to visit the thread and for trying out the game. I hope that you'll continue to enjoy it as other chapters get released. Now that's a lot of questions there (drinking my morning coffee after I wake up to respond lol). :cool:

The story is constantly ongoing as development also is ongoing as I have proof readers who read through what I've written, before beta testers later on also look out for anything that's missed to minimise mess on releases (still chances of the odd mistake getting on through though. but I have an official channel on my Discord server to report any/all bugs that are found). Do factor in, that aside from some testers/proof-readers (who are all amazing) and a lovely chap who's been a godsend when it comes to helping me with coding I am a one person team.

If you've played through Chapter 1, you'll see that those actually classed as love interests are a lot lower in the journal. As character entries are added in the journal upon meeting them, they're divided between potential love interests and regular supporting characters. So no, you won't be romancing ten or so characters, so having "romance/sex" with all or the majority of the characters would be a no, due to the fact that to fit all of that in would ruin the immersion and flow of the story, which is key and add unknown headaches in added time and jumbled mess code wise in the game to add. And, if I did that, there would be no realistic way of balancing screen time for all of them, without it perm altering what my games vision is meant to be and the game would be dragging on forever, that even the harem fans would eventually get bored. Whether, I add any additional spicy/romantic moments with non-romance characters remains to be seen, based on how my development goes and if I'm able/decide to add those in. But, that'll naturally be down to my discretion only, vs pressures from the community as this is not and will not be a harem sort of game. It is first and foremost a horror avn after all. But, any one who has seen the 80s slasher movies will know that a lot of them have even if a tiny bit their share of "boobs and nudity", so yes, I will have sex/romance in this game. I want players to feel immersed from the "crushes" of romance that they have, to the female rivalry/drama, to the slice of life, just enjoying themselves at camp for the short period, before "shit hits the fan", which as damnedfrog perfectly noted the mc (you) also are at risk. If I didn't make the player feel "anything", whether good or bad for the characters, then it'll be a less impactful and a shit slasher near the end of the game. Plus, would make choices more meaningless if you don't care. What those choices will be, I won't divulge, but will let you the player speculate on what I "might" have happen later on.

From what is in the game so far, you'll see that it's more in the western-style slasher format from the 80s. Japanese and Asian culture have made some excellent horrors, but theirs are more psychological... that is not saying, that I won't "borrow" inspiration from Asian horrors either. The prologue obviously is linear, and Chapter 1 is mostly linear with a few choices, but generally stays on the same path... chapter 2, contains several diverting paths. I cannot say how much, but I do plan to add alternating paths/decisions, which could alter who (if any) of the potential LI's you pursue (so forget the "Imma conquer them all" at least in one playthrough) and have an impact later on in the game. I'd say enjoy the ride (as if you're watching a movie) and make what choices you would wish to make when they appear, then let the cookie crumbs fall into place as you go down whatever path it'll lead you. Maybe you'll love, or deeply regret whatever path(s) those are.

As, for the prologue girls, who knows. Maybe, maybe not. I think that it ended leaving that perfect parting question for you all to ponder on and after going back and redoing the visuals for the prologue as part of chapter 1's release gives it more justice I feel.

Well, no. :) I would take time for her to sleep with every girl, so the game wouldn't be that short. ;) And by the time she has accomplished that some of them may be already dead. :) :p :D :eek: Because isn't the dumbest ones / those who make the dumbest decisions die first? ;) And it would be funny if everyone around her would be dropping dead like flies after she has slept with them? ;) :D Or on the other hand before she gets to sleep with them. :) (like "dang it, there goes another one. Am I not getting laid in a summer camp?!") She could even become the suspect. :LOL:
But probably not. Though it could be fun.

I think this is one of the kind of character that have the best chance to survive in a 80's slasher movie, no?
But what make little sense is that she will go back working in the very camp where she had witnessed a slaughter.

I can't picture her with an axe... Although serial killers don't look like count Orlock from "Nosferatu". They look like common folk. But what motive would she have? She had an axe to grind with a guy. ;) Shouldn't she be attacking the guys? :unsure:

CHAPTER 2 (0.3) of FAIRWOOD RETREAT 87 IS NOW IN BETA TESTING


Happy Friday all! It's been less than week since I teased that "soon" the release for Chapter 2 would come out.

A top hat lift for the amazing coder who's been helping me out all along, who has cut down the time I'd have needed significantly due to some dev life saving changes. There are still multiple important game features, which I need to add, which at this current time has not, but at least my testers can get cracking on seeing how the game looks and plays. So progress is going great! Can also follow development as always also over on Patreon and Itch.io:
