Not disagreeing, but do you think the fact that that's all the game is has anything to do with it? If all you're publishing is an animation viewer, then you're going to attract the crowd that wants that kinda stuff.
Warning! Wall of text incoming. This is mostly conjecture/speculation on my part mixed with what knowledge I got from my MSc, so I might be pulling a lot of this out of my ass. I also discuss the fetish disparity in game under the same light.
Strap yourself in, this is going to be a doozy.
It is the laws of supply and demand, so yes it does have a huge influence on the supporters/interest they recieve, especially since the original Fallen Doll was always supposed to be a glorified scene viewer. The management between the days, would have constituted for the bare minimum of a game, not much else.
I believe we can actually see this effect you mention on their fetish selection as well, going from Fallen Doll to Operation Lovecraft (I'll refer to them respectively as FD and OL from now on.). The original was never meant to be almost entirely vanilla, but I'm guessing engine limitations, lesser budget and such kept them from branching to more depraved stuff. (Or maybe they were just comfortable with how things were going. Less stress I guess.) They stopped working on the original exactly after they started working on heavier fetishes, right after adding the lab. (On a side note: Not in the beginning, but after a while I also think they mostly made the original as a proof of concept.) But, and that's a huge ass But, when they started working on the original, and even while they were producing it, they did communicate the willingness and even eagerness to add a lot more hardcore stuff to the game. (One of them does have a bestiality fetish according to them, so they might have a pretty wide fetish spectrum.)
So the marketing and promises basically worked as bait for those that enjoy the spicier side of life, and they were patiently waiting for their turn to be satisfied, this is why a lot more hardcore suff is taking over the polls right now for OL. Although you might be wondering, why does the dreamer have so much content then? Well basically they took way too long to get anywhere with FD and it being filled with mostly softcore and vanilla stuff (I guess the stockade, isn't so soft, but I think you catch my drift.) it lured in the crowd that gets off to the simple pleasures of life.
So right now the game has a supporting base that's very divided in their fetish preferences, but they mostly agree that scenes come first and foremost before gameplay.
My prediction is that over time the spicier people will overtake the simple pleasures people, because of a few things.
- They are happy to get catered to no matter how little content they get, since fetishes like these in this kind of quality are rare, even if it comes with a healthy side serving of boring vanilla. On the other hand the vanilla loving folk are repulsed, by the mere fact that a dog like alien could be touching their girls. (Let's not even get into the topic of the horse and hog.
) So I believe they are going to get slowly filtered out.
- Since this stuff is so rare they are also willing to pay a lot more for it. In stark contrast to this rarity, you can find very well done vanilla stuff all over the internet, OL isn't the only one.
- The whole Lovecraft lore and mythos is a lot more appealing to the more deranged individual like myself, and less to those on the side of normalcy. (At least I think that's the case. Most people I talk to have no clue who Lovecraft even is.)
