Some of you may be wondering when the next database update is, and that's a good question.
Because I've got one here right now. Be warned, this one is almost 2GB.
This next update adds
319 flashes, bringing the total up to
2125. Plus minor fixes and updates to metadata. You can view the new additions in the spoiler box below:
Not much of a technical update unfortunately, just new additions and chipping away at old requests.
Current plans I have for the future:
-
Continue adding flashes.
I do make an effort to write down everyone's requests (which I keep in a to-do list that you can view in the Discord) but sometimes I miss or forget, so don't feel bad if you need to ask me again just to make sure it's added or if I plan to add it.
-
Make downloading the database easier.
Yeah I know it's not as convenient as it could be, but I'm working within the limits of what I'm able to do with Playnite and not having the resources for my own download server. Currently the database is sitting around 2GB which IMO isn't too bad if you use a download manager. I've tried compressing it but the results weren't great and ultimately didn't save much space (only around 200MB). There's also the option of converting from lossless PNG to lossy JPEG which I haven't tried, but if you'd like this as an alternate download and don't mind the quality loss let me know.

Make downloading the games easier.
Again, working within the limits of what I'm able to do.
Ideally I'd love to be able to change the function of Playnite's install button to work as a download button, that way you can just one click install on demand, like Steam or Flashpoint Infinity. Apparently modifying the install button functionality will be added in Playnite 9 (currently Flashbang is running on Playnite 8) so I'll have to look into that then. Until then, download manager and copy paste.
-Make installing the games easier.
Ties back into the previous paragraph, but ultimately the "zip and script" process is a bit of a hack I threw together so people could download games individually and not need to redownload 20+ gigabytes of flashes just to be able to play new ones I added. If you're still having trouble unzipping everything I personally use Bandizip's Smart Extract feature which aligns the folders perfectly after unzipping, but you can also try using
Shittyplayer's extracting script.
-Update tags.
Not really too much to say on this one, it's just a very arduous process since I need to personally open/remember each flash's content and apply the proper tags. This might need to be community sourced. Oh and figure out the genre tags.
-Better instructions.
I think a video guide might be overkill but if I'm not able to implement those changes to the download process above, I'll see if I can put something together for folks that still struggle with trying to follow my very horrible text guide.
That should be everything I have to share for now. If I go MIA again blame FF14.
