Unfortunately, my worst fears have come to be true. I tried to stay positive about the situation, but nothing changed in the last month or so. I had to cancel my sub, but I STILL have hope for the dev's return someday (call me a fool if you deem so). If it happens, I will most likely resub to their project.
If anyone calls you a fool, it won't be me.
The main reason I don't back projects in progress(and I've heard the very valid counter-argument, "How can a game be made with no funding?") is because of situations where the game just gets abandoned. It happens much too often.
That's why when a dev/dev team:
- Goes dark out of nowhere for long periods of time
- Decides to redo their game from scratch late into the game's cycle
- Has personal or family issues(I'm not heartless, I understand things happen my own mother has dementia)
- Starts slowing down with updates
- Consistently lessens the estimated length of play time or quality of their updates
- Begins a new project when the current one isn't done
...or anything else I've forgotten to mention here, I am immediately wary of the game potentially being abandoned shortly thereafter.
I mean, you might get lucky and a dev comes back with something after a year or so like "Love and Submission", but mostly you get a "Gates Motel" where it's just over.
There are a number of very solid devs out there who don't pull these shenanigans, but I wait until they finish before throwing money in the til.
