I don't see any problem using Unreal for 2D games, the engine encourages it. It's just that the dev was a bit inexperienced when they started the project, and all they've done so far is self taught, which is very admirable
Not a dev myself but it seems like a bit of a hassle to turn a 3d engine into a 2d one, is there even any advantages to it?

Well even in the given example, those are heavily polished indieSTUDIO games, not a one-ish person effort. To be fair almost everyone praises pasec's potential, so it could be good... in the distant future... or never...

The only advantage I can tell myself so far is the visual coding method (blueprint), allows people that is allergic to coding language (C#,C++,Python...) like me to code the game without relying too much on them

Can't deny the fact that other engines have more advantages for 2D games than Unreal, but definitely not because Unreal can't make an optimized game. It would take a learning curve to gain enough experience in that aspect, though

Which the dev of pasec clearly lacks, I hate his philosophy of content over QOL like yeah new content is good but it doesn't matter if the game is unstable as hell
Doesn't help it takes him weeks if not a few months to address bugs like where the game somehow managed to take 100% from gpus and cpus

I mean, we shouldn't be harsh on him, he's clearly doing his best with new updates/hotfixes coming up pretty regularly

I did talk to him a bit when he started this project, I suggested to him to use other engines for 2D games, but he ended up using Unreal anyway, perhaps he had reasons to do so.

If I had to take a wild guess, he's probably like me, who can't learn traditional coding languages, which leaves Unreal visual coding feature as our only choice to chase after our game dev dream
