Most games abandonned by devs are due to a crackdown by Patreon shutting down many devs. These devs have a hard time getting back on their feet, if ever as in most cases, Patreon was their main source of revenue and it is hard to get supporters to migrate to a different platform like subscribestar

For example, you have an unpaid hobby and then suddenly you start making money from this hobby. And if you lose that money, then with the loss of money you lose the hobby, because the money reward has replaced the pleasure of the hobby so you dont have any motivation.
You're talking about a subset of the population that only does the most convenient support option available. Patreon is there because it offers recurring donations via paypal(my assumption).
