Something I noticed from sites like this, is that there's a huge amount of talent. A huge amount of people is crazy talented. Many more than most of us usually give credit to. What's lacking is planification, determination and motivation. So many people with talent start making games because it's fun, it's a form of self expression, it's art, and they are learning a lot and then some times they receive recognition and feels great... but then after that honey moon there's only work, work and work. Complex, tiresome, and repetitive. The self expression stops being enough as motivation, the money helps when it arrives but... when there's only the money, we saw what happen. Stuff like Something Unlimited. It keeps things going but at a huge price that's not worth the money people are investing.
It's sad but every time these games are abandoned, we all learn. The developers learn, and we do it too. Not to be too attached to incomplete stories. That's why i was waiting. I am tired of that feeling.
Thank you for your answer by the way.
That's true, but you need to pick your games.
My strike rate between abandoned vs completed games are actually quite good.
I don't have it on this pc, but for a quick thumb suck, my ratio between completed vs abandoned games is something like 8:1. (8 completed for every 1 abandoned).
The biggest determining factor is time. I do not start to play a new game unless it has at least 6 months development time since the first release.
That already tells you about the levels of commitment from the dev.
I also tend to pick only games with good ratings (4+) but I will make exceptions for genres that are unpopular. If NTR/Sandbox are in the tag, it's almost immediately a -1-star deduction. So for games with these tags, I will add a star to give it a fair rating. Similarly, games with Futa tag in general score a very high. So I adjust the rating slightly downwards.
The reason I go for good quality games only, is that the dev will be less likely to become discouraged, halfway through the game. There was one game in particular, that I enjoyed enormously, but the comments in the thread were so negative, that the dev just decided to quit (After more than a year of rolling out good updates).
I also wait an update or two before I play it again, since I like to play a significant chunk of a game on each update (at least 30 minutes to an hour)
It also helps a lot if it's the dev's second game.
So TLDR, I'm picky and patient when I chose what game to play and I'm seldom disappointed with an abandoned tag.
Not to say that it does not happen, but for me it's so seldom that I hardly notice it. And sometimes the dev will even resolve his issues and resume development.
