How do you compress the videos so much while maintaining quality?
I know you already googled a bit based on the comment you left in my profile, but for those curious:

Most videos (like 90%) are encoded using H264, which is a codec from 2004 iirc. There have been new codecs since, obv. H265 is the followup, but due to a stupid licensing structure it's not widely used. AV1 came out in 2018, which is fairly new.

AV1, being new and all, has better compression. Its backed by netflix, google, microsoft (iirc) and a few other large companies. Its open source and royalty free. 4K videos on youtube already use it. The benefits are obvious: lower file sizes with similar or greater quality than before saves space on servers.

The only downside is that AV1 needs a decent processor to encode for it. Nothing astronomical, and it depends on quality settings obviously, but something much newer than H264.

Pixel drain is not working do you have any other links?
I dunno if double posting is allowed but I uploaded all Pixeldrain files to Mega:

Also, I finished encoding a JAV and I was trying to compare the two. Try to spot the difference. The final encode wound up being 1.1 GB iirc whilst the original file was 6.5 or so I think. There will ALWAYS be SOME sort of data loss when compressing, the question is how easily can you see it.

I'm no pro at this stuff and Handbrake is sort of an 'ez mode' for encoding. But if you're TRULY serious about this stuff I hear ffmpeg is much better. I dont mess with settings to much or apply filters.

my processor is pretty old now. I haven't upgraded because I play like 2 games lol, and they both work great on my 4670k. But for upscaling and compressing I might upgrade soon. Waiting to see what amd releases come fall.

Yeah, I have an i7-14700K. Fairly new and up there. I had a laptop that had a processor from 7 or so years ago, but I believe it was newer than yours (which seems to be 10 years old). What would take me maybe 2 hours on my current PC would take maybe 24 hours on that older processor, even when I bumped up the settings if I remember right.

So depending on what you're encodign I dunno if it's even worth on that processor. I'll still encode that stuff you posted on Mega and throw a link on your profile. I really don't mind doing it since it really doesn't take long on my rig and I want to do the material anyway.

That'd be awesome. Feel free to share it in the studiofow thread when you're done so everyone can benefit from it. Or just share it with me and I'll put it there.

Edit: How do you think Av1 is for 4k video though? Av1 isn't lossless so there is some quality loss. Have you tried it on anything 4k yet?

Compared to pixel drain which is 800mb this is larger than that 1.1gb how can I download it?

PD says 1.1 also.

Hit the download button.

Should be exactly the same. I've done Rinhee's stuff, which has a height of 1500x, so roughly 75% of the way to 4k if my math is right.

From what I read, theoretically you can increase compression rate at higher resolutions because there's so much quality you can lose some of it in the process and not notice it. But if it's some old 360p broadcast you ideally don't wanna compress much at all because it's so small that you don't wanna lose a pixel of quality.

The best way to go about it would be if the original file was compressed at av1 from the beginning. So the raw file. If you're compressing something that's already been compressed it's like re-saving a jpeg. Of course, in practice its visually indistinguishable to me.

And TRUST THE FUCK ME I've stared into my monitor, turned up the brightness, and really scrutinized pixels. Taken screenshots at the exact same time. Have had the files playing simultaneously. Etc. It's extremely difficult to see differences between a file that has been re-encoded and the original encoding. I've ran it through online tools that process the image and even then the outcome is always maybe a 3% difference in pixels or something. So it's not something I really worry about.

With some files you can maybe see a little more difference. Otherwise it's the type of thing that no one is gonna do with a video file while watching pornography. Who's gonna zoom in 500% and scrutinize pixels? Having the original is always preferable but, for my own collection I'm fine with it. I'd encourage anyone to open up the two images I posted above and switch between the tabs quickly to see just how similar they are. Concentrate on one specific area and switch tabs back and forth.

What was that about suggesting Other's to touch some grass? 24 posts from you since Friday. Weird.
I’m gonna do you a courtesy and just ignore you. It’s been relatively quiet since the release, and then you wanna sprout back and be like ‘why you still being social’. I’m not in the camp that’s asking for updates and pining for heroes. I actually discuss things in a discussion thread. So I won’t be wasting time on you.

I use FFmpeg to convert my files to h.265. It uses my Nvidia GTX 2070 Super Graphic Card to speed up the progress. There is minimal pixel loss and i save around 1/3 to 2/3 Space doing it.

Here is the command if someone wanna play around with it
