How does the cheat engine work, and how can I change the amount of matter I have, I tried the tutorials and they confused me even more?

0) Game needs to be running first.
1)First you select the game process(The glowing button in top left corner).
2)Once the game process is selected, look up in game how much mater you have.
3)Then type that number into the Value field and hit First scan (It will probably show a lot of results).
4)Then grind up a bit more matter, put new amount into Value field and hit Next scan.
5)There should be fewer results, grind up or use some matter
6) Look which value in results changed if it's still too many repeat step 4 till found values aren't as many
7)Double click on the value that matches the matter, it will appear in the lover box
8)In the lower window edit value to desired amount.
