Did you actually get Mtool to work on linux? last time I tried it it didn't work through wine or proton.
So I've just been using it through a VM when I use it...
ah nvm above question, just checked and it seems to work now.
I guess I'll firewall it and use it on my main system then.
Also you seem to have a slight misunderstanding in this post.
Mtool is a windows program that is used as a realtime cheat and mtl tool for various eroge game file-types, not an emulation layer.
you will have to run it through an emulation layer for it or any other windows program to run on linux.

this program is probably the easiest way to get a first time setup done and keeping proton/ gamescope/steamtinkerlaunch up to date and installed for either lutris or steam.
+ a short explanation for wine vs proton.
wine = windows emulation layer
proton = valve's custom wine with best settings for games in the steam database.
what I use:
Steam
-> steamtinkerlaunch + Proton-GE + gamescope
* for steam games
* you could also just add your non steam games to steam
* reminder that steam tells your friends what you are currently playing if it is a steam game and you are online.
Lutris
-> Wine-GE + gamescope
* for non-steam games
+ a short explanation for game saves.
games made with rpgmaker/etc save files in the game's folder.
games made with unity/etc. save files in the game's wineprefix.
wineprefixes = skeleton windows directories
for runtime files.
locations
for Steam
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/#
* every # in the folder is a custom wineprefix.
* # = Steam_ID or RNG if it is a non-steam game.
* install & run protontricks-gui to easily find which # is which game.
for Lutris
~/.wine
or you can make custom ones
