The bad points path is a deception path not a bad ruthless guy path
In the game
Long Road Home
by
OBD Games, the reason you were deceived about the ring is that your
Bad Points (10) crossed a critical threshold that alters the "World State" toward the
Deception Path.
Why You Were Deceived
Even though you had decent
Respect (9) and character-specific points (
Della 6,
Stan 4), the game's logic prioritizes the
Bad Point tally when determining the outcome of high-stakes trust items like the ring.
- The Bad Point Threshold: In the OBD Games engine, reaching 10 Bad Points before the "Fox Box" or major plot resolutions (like the ring confrontation) flags the player as "Corrupt" or "Untrustworthy."
- The World State Shift: Once this threshold is hit, secondary characters (and sometimes even allies like JD or Rachael) may lie to you as a defensive measure. They perceive your actions as self-serving, leading them to withhold or manipulate information about key items to protect themselves or the group.
- Point Imbalance: Your high Bad Points effectively "overrode" your Respect points. In many scenes, the game checks if Bad_Points > Respect_Points. If they are nearly equal or Bad Points are higher, the narrative favors betrayal and legal consequences for the group.
The Role of the Ring
The ring is often a symbol of loyalty or a "safety net" item. If you are on the
Hero Path (low bad points), the truth about the ring is revealed, often serving as a way to clear JD's name or secure your family's future. On the
Deception Path (high bad points), characters hide the ring's true significance or its location to keep it out of your hands, fearing you will use it for your own gain rather than for the family's benefit.
That's right without the mercy trigger by having JD arrested you never get the full game OBD intended. I found this out the hard way in my last play through. Every single thing that you think you are supposed to be doing as an outlaw is backwards. With high bad points you are not actually trusted and you don't get the same rewards as a good path that manages to successfully trigger the mercy trigger. Everyone who went the bad route experienced a shorter, but satisfying version rather than the full game obd intended. Alot of the content was locked out as punishment for you allowing yourself to be corrupted. You could have been just as dominant and commanding on a good path, but you need to successfully pass the mercy trigger with JD being arrested rather than killed for the world state to be calm so everything is unlocked.
