Took the latest patch as an opportunity to start a fresh game with no cheats. Random thoughts:
- The engine chugs. Not sure if it's just a Unity flaw but saves/loads and swapping topics just takes forever and conversations could be quicker considering how many of them you have to do.
- Leveling NPC skills still takes too long. I've got all the gray skills maxed and the target topics revealed and I'm still only getting about 6 points per conversation. That means 17 conversations to get to 100 per topic, per character at best.
- Focus regen is low. You get 1/3/6 for the sleep options, mobile gaming gives you 6, TV gives you 5, and dinner gives you 5 and early game those are all once per day. So that's 14 hours to get 26 focus. I was constantly running empty until I unlocked Video Games and three hours of Video Games gives 18 by itself. Three hours of gaming/day feels mandatory.
- There isn't a good flow. Conversations are the flagship mechanic of this game and in my head there's this brilliant game where you talk to Diane and she gives you a topic that works well with Richard and he gives you a topic that works well with Gina, who gives you something for Charlie, who gives you something for Becky, etc.
- Unfortunately, the game doesn't play like that due to the low focus availability, the lack of available topics, and the lack of intertwined topics. I talked about focus above. Until you get enough static topics you tend to run out of people's interests. Richard can give you Famous People which is great for Gina who can give you a Dirty Jokes / Sexual topic which is great for Charlie and the train stops there unfortunately. Everyone else only gives you people's neutral topics (except Gina who can also give you Famous People for herself).
- So you end up either just earning money for gifts or spending all your time doing solo activities instead of talking to people.
Anyway, just my latest two cents.
1) V8.00 has a memory leak. The bugfix in testing is an improvement, but it's still there. So you'll want to restart the game occasionally.
Also.. Unity is always a bit slow if you're used to Renpy. But Renpy can't really handle games with this sort of complexity.
2) Agreed that the game starts pretty slow. But 7 - 10 pts per tag is fairly common in the mid to late game.
3) Agreed that focus regen is tough at the start. It's why I always start with the Gamer profile. Starting with Video Games unlocked is a big help. And it gets downright easy once you get Video Games to Lvl2.
4) My experience differs from yours here.
Your chores get you topics for Diane who's topics are (IIrc) usually useful with either Dick or Gina. Have a snack or do some exercise, get topics for Becky, who gives you topics for Dick, who gives you topics for Becky (loop) or Gina.
But, no, you can't just rely on conversations for topics. For starters, you use 3 topics in a conversation and usually only get 1 in return. So you *have* to build up Topics elsewhere.
Which is where activities come in. Do chores, get topic (Diane). Have a snack, get topic (Becky). Watch a trivia video (I recommend this alot at the start of a game), get a topic (Dick). Watch some porn, get a topic (Charlie). Etc.
And each of these activities add to Nathan's XP, so you're continuing to build the whole time.
'The train', as you call it, is definitely there. It's just not on a loop. Sometimes you need to change trains to pick up the extra tags you need to continue the journey.
