Is there a way to have people in my household automatically train in combat oriented skills or do I have to put them in my party and take them to the dojo myself?

Since the training cap is not mentioned in the wiki for guards, it's 80/80/80 for Melee/Ranged/Discipline. Make sure the captain and the guards are not in bondage when midnight hits. To be extra safe, make sure they are not actively in your followers group when midnight hits. Some gains are blocked by that, others aren't. Safer to just do it than remember which stat gains are blocked or are not blocked.
