you're really not gonna do any efforts to figure shits out by yourself now, are you ?
well that's uncalled for, given that half the wiki info lacks the depth of the mechanical code. My pet peeve is those with a middling amount of knowledge condescending to those with less. It's like stack overflow on full display.

Canes Yes, the chances are very low. The plant increase to 99 has a 1 in 4 chance inside a 1 in 5 chance, or 5%. Furthermore, it can only occur during the first phase of a shift.

The Seneca ride is a 1 in 5 chance, but only with a first class ticket.

If it's truly blocking a quest (i dont have experience with this since almost always take high int characters which usually means high sci/aca) - you can cheat by entering your choice in browser console:

SugarCube.State.variables.tech = WAHTEVERNUMBERUWANT

So I did all the Academy courses, I've read all the books on the subject and I've pretty much exhausted all the options I can think of. My science skill is stuck at 77 and apparently it's not enough for Mai-Lynn's quest. I've also tried with a Techie, but have no luck in hacking that second door. I also have no idea where to find the last book, The Beyond, needed for more science.

What are some other options to raise science, besides what the wiki mentions (RPG campaign, working a shift, drunken discussions, etc.) -- that never work anyway?
As far as your Science skill goes, your issue was doing things in the wrong order.

If you grind your science to 50 in the Orient before finishing a single book or course, you'd end up with more than 100 Science (provided your Int is high enough to earn max points from them).

As for your current predicament, do you have at least the 2nd level handheld computer and have you tried bringing multiple Techies? I don't remember the exact requirement for that particular door, but 77 definitely doesn't sound like you should have 0 chance.

I've tried it 15 days in a row, it never gave me anything. So either the chances are extremely low that renders it borderline impossible, or you get nothing past a certain point? So I guess now I'm stuck...
I raised my science in Furry's Tavern with the white haired old relative. Just reach round two of carousing and spam F5 or Control+R to refresh page. It was the only way for me without grinding for ingame months just for one point.

I might be wrong, but doesn't the Tech Module at your house have an impact on hacking success? Have you tried upgrading that?

Is there no way to do incest in this game?
Use json.err Expansion Mod

I figure I'll need at least 10-20 more points to have any effect on hacking.

Only for home-hacking and as of now, with just a couple of quests. It doesn't help on anything else.

Sucks.

What about the Historical Society? I'm pretty sure either the library or cigar room can raise Science.

edit - looking at the code, it looks like the cigar room can get you up to 100 science, the library trains academics

I mean, yeah, I guess that's one way to do it. You need 10 days per +1 point, 4 hours each day (half day). 100 days to get 10 points, or 230 days to get to +23 (100), so it's grindy as fuck. I may have cornered myself with this one.

I fail to see how anyone would enjoy that sort of grinding, but hey, maybe you're right. It's still in development, stats may need more balancing.
I don't like grinding myself. But this game is very complex with lots of mechanics and aspects. Think of it as it's real life. Will you be able to learn something big (whole science thing) in a couple months? Maybe but only if you ignore everything else completely. But most likely not.

Hopefully the science bump comes in handy later as well, not just for Mai-Lynn's quest where you need about 100, and then it's useless afterwards.

Again, I might be wrong, but the hacking mechanic looks like it takes your science skill as your base chance.

Then it deducts the level of the door, which in this Mai-Lynn quest second door looks like -110.

So that's -33.

But you get +15 for a mark II computer and another +15 for a mark III computer, which gets you up to -3.

Then you get another +15 for each NPC with the Techie trait you bring along. Assuming your Mai isn't a techie, you can get up to +45 by bringing three Techies.

That's +42 chance. Very rollable.

Maybe your problem isn't your science skill but your lack of Techies.

Ok, this might seem like nitpicking, but ... there is no way to take the twins to the Golden Dragon for their birthday and have them both acknowledged. Whichever one you start the event with is the one who gets the attention, even if you have both as followers.

Never mind you can't have a threesome with them, but I digress....

First world (ok, fictional world) problems!

Edit: There was some code to handle it, but it appears to be unused -- "Golden" is not accessed anywhere and appears to be replaced by "GoldenTexts" which has a variable "_twobirth" that does in fact deal with it. However, it's only set in "Golden" and that's never called so it's always false. Testing a simple fix.....

Edit 2: Nope -- other variables need to be passed in, but at least I get some dialog. Going to try one more thing.

Edit 3: enabling the "Golden" code leads to a hang. Oh well. Not enough beer in my house to tackle this one tonight. I suspect this was deliberately left limited to one birthday person.

Most of those mechanics add very little to the overall game. Like sending npcs to the academy or teaching them and a host of others. Overall it is just busy work and a pointless time sink.

The main draw for me is the world, the npcs and the quests. Wish it would focus more on that. Give me meaningful ways to interact with the world not pointless minutia.

So teaching your slaves so they're better at the various jobs, or sending them to learn is *not* interacting with the world...?

I think if that's your opinion, you kind of have to give a more concrete example of what you want, not just a "give me meaningful ways".

Because that could mean almost anything.
