IMO the triggers in this game for story events should all be made less strict and story progress should be based on things you've done rather than what is happening now. i.e. they should be coded to trigger whenever x >= 9 rather whenever x = 9, even if they are only expected to ever happen when x = 9.
If all the triggers were coded this way, then a bug where people progressed too fast in one part of the story would just manifest as people seeing references to story events that haven't happened yet or people you haven't met which is not great but not the end of the world. As it is, every time a bug like this happens everyone who experiences it bricks their save file.
