The current version of the game is either 0.6.1 or 0.6.9, so, yes, you need the patch to get to 0.8.1.

try using the "massage" in bonus content in computer before going downstairs. Somehow it helped me

I tried both bonus contents and rolled back 2 days after changing it to normal with no luck :-(
