Yes developers can sign up here, and interact with people playing their games. Some might even decide to finance their games.
But neither of things you mentioned is *providing services to developers*.
They can use any social media for marketing, but nobody except crowd funding providers like Patreon is providing them services. They can use same "services" as other members.
To cut it short, I strongly doubt ICSTOR will give fuck over people ranting here he hadn't post any update in this year. On hold and Abandoned tags are made to inform users, not to "warn" developers.

So you have a game. But you and your friends are the only ones who would ever play it without an outlet like this. As I mentioned B4 this is a toxic product that has very limited means of distribution. These developers live off of contributions from fans. Steam won't touch this stuff. So you are the developer of this type of incomplete game. Please explain where else you would get millions of views and in this developers case, 1000's of Ps. Social media? This is true for every creator not just Icstor. I don't think Icstor is a fan of this site since it is against the rules to mention it in his discord.

Are you serious? People are free to support him and people can have different opinions, but explaining or arguing why they would do so is considered excuse making by you? Besides I literally didn't make any excuses for Icstor, if anything I attacked him for a lack of communication and "accidentally" charging people in April.

This made me have a funny thought. Obviously these developers spend so much time on these games and make so much money that you can safely assume that it's their main source of income and probably their only job (it's a pretty awsome job let's be fair)

How do you explain what you do for a living to people? like friends, parents, romantic partners?

Yeah, I don't think anyone spoke to Icstor personally. But what are you suggesting? Should we attach disclaimers to every post coming from discord that say "keep in mind, this might be a lie or someone else might be using the developers account"?
You are free to believe him or not when he says he is back to work. Really doesn't change anything around here except the tag.
I'm just telling you people believe him because out of all the active developers Icstor might be the one that has been around the longest. The dude almost single-handedly started the Incest craze alongside Dark Silver (I think others like Mr.Dots or LewdLab came later but I'm talking from memory here so someone can fact-check me on that).

To not further derail this thread, I'll say I think we agree that people can support Icstor if they want to. You and me personally wouldn't and take his word with a grain of salt, albeit to a varying degree. Fair?

There obviously gonna be a lot of abandoned games from patreon since patreon is the main platform that all these developers can get known and make a living out of creating games. And because of that reason the competition rises and a lot of those devs stop because they don't make enough money (usually) to make it their work or for some other reason. So saying that most patreon based games are abandoned is wrong because you don't factor the fact that most devs are starting from patreon. Also specifically about icstor even though a lot of people say he rushed his last games and finished them quickly you have to factor in other things like the decrease of his patreon the last months those games where developed. If as a dev you see that a big chunk of your followers stop supporting you understand something is wrong. So judging the fact that his next game is on ren'py and that most big games are also on ren'py he rushed the games so that he can change platform and make his next game more accessible. Last year when those games where developed he had about 1000 patreons while developing two games. This year he has almost 6000 patreons and one of the reasons is the change to ren'py. So you can understand why he would want to rush the other games.

Somebody help me understand the rationale behind this ongoing "developer is a good guy/bad guy" debate:

Serialized retail games, developed by hundreds of people on salaries and with high-quality tools, take years to develop and cost $60 USD a whack, not including "release" versions, companion toys, etc. and people (largely) accept this model. And this doesn't even include loot boxes, paid DLC and all of the other accouterments which can raise the life-time total of a 3-game series to over $500 USD.

And yet here we are, arguing about something that most people aren't going to pay for at all or, even for those that do, paying a buck a month. Does it really matter, in the overall scheme of things if the dev returns or not? I like this game more than a lot of retail games and would like to see it taken to the next level of completeness but...come on...is this really the biggest issue that we have in our lives?

So...help me understand the emotional investment that some of you have in this debate.

The down side of a long break is that it can kill your motivation to finish a project, especially if you lose track or focus of where you were going with it before you took a break. It's hard to just pick up where you left off. I think there is a good chance for a rushed ending after the dev returns.
