I think the release date is used for the official updates, while thread updates for links/front page updates(mods, saves etc.) In this case, they just updated both.

For it's time it wasn't. For today's standards, clearly yes.

To comprehend how long it was, we had a full pandemic in between.
At first release, the last Iphone was 6S. Now we're at 15.
Hong Kong protests happened.
Fire in notre-dame happened.
We still didn't have a black hole image.
Port of Beirut wasn't still destroyed.
Shinzo Abe was alive.
Barack Obama was US president on the previous year of this game first release.
Fernando Alonso was still in F1. He left, then came back 3 years before this game release.

So yeah, a lot of things have changed.
