Rather than a gun, it is more of a kitchen knife really (in terms of threat). Hooking programs have long been associated with virus because of their operation. In layman, security guard allowing a maintenance guy into restricted area because the maint-guy needs to do his work. Thing is, the guy is working on maintenance and should not be granted with permanent access so only periodic. Same here with Windows Defender and because computer (only yes/no answer) are not humans (yes/no/maybe answer).I don't know much about computers but the gist I'm picking up is the creator has a gun that they can use on the people who use this program and they're just choosing not to use it so far. There's no real way to know whether or not that'll change because you're essentially allowing the program to inject data directly onto your computer.
I could be totally wrong and maybe it's less of a trust exercise ("Honor Among Thieves" considering this site) than I think it is. Would need someone who knows more about computer stuff than I do to comment, but even then they could just be an involved party astroturfing.
At the very least if the culling one day occurs I'm hoping that the Patreons will be spared.
