No, you're doing something wrong. I can confirm that I have played all the way through 0.86 and the only bugs I encountered were the nine SymphonyoftheNight already identified, (and even then only some of them showed up for me).
To find this list, look at the "Multiple Mods + Fixes" section of the OP, then scroll down to "Bug Fixes v0.86". If what you encounter isn't on this list, it isn't broken. I just navigated you directly to the bug fixes for all the broken pages. You may want to bookmark that or download them in advance.
Are you sure you're supposed to go to Otter Labs and not Chemistry Lab in School? Normally, Mrs. Jordan talks to you after class and sends you to talk to her husband at Otter Labs. To get to him, you talk to the receptionist at Otter Labs and select Dr. Jordan instead of Maria. If she's sent you to her husband, then you should have two choices at the front desk.
If you're using Book of Faces to navigate around in-game, it's not great. It's often misspelled, or skips a step. It tells you to meet Maria by the pool for all of the first half of the game, for instance.
