yes, its so optional, you literally HAVE to say yes to all the options that lead up to it. If you got a problem just TALKING to the gay characters, that is unavoidable since they're involved in the story

Nothing needs to be added because most players do not get this issue as it is not a bug. The issue was you did not finish the Tyna car joy ride quest. Hence you missed the Rachel scene and only able to continue after all those mentioned.

Hmm, as far as I understood, I did everything with Rachel (also saw that there is heart in the ventilation at the roof in the school and also there is an exclamation symbol at left toilet at recess).
What is "you did not finish the Tyna car joy ride quest."? I did a big lap and timer went gone, and then I went to the house. Car just disappeared.

Ignore the exclamation, doesnt mean anything anymore. The heart is for Sarah when love/relationship points are high enough and you buy the card for her from the girl in restroom. If memory servers me right. You get a sex scene there.
