He was also dealing with some serious shit and a major bout of depression when he made the original NGE, so I imagine he has some complicated feelings about it.
Oh no no, it's much funnier than that. Let me explain [Sry for tangent, mods pls forgive];

The character 'Ayanami Rei' was built from the ground up by Hideaki Anno to be a 'criticism' of the soft spoken, gentle, submissive, feminine characters that 'otakus' love in anime & manga but taken to the extreme. He intended for her to be regarded as disgusting, repulsive & off-putting to the 'otakus'/fandom he so thoroughly hated............................ instead Ayanami Rei was so incredibly beloved that she alone sold more merch than every other NGE character combined by an extreme margin. She became the 'golden girl' of Evangelion and was not just accepted but quickly lauded as the greatest waifu of all time. Hideaki Anno is on record saying that he considers Ayanami Rei as a character & her popularity, to be a horrendous sign of Japan's profound weakness/refusal to grow/inability to move past WWII (?). When he was told that Misato was more popular overseas, he said something along the lines of he wasn't expecting that but it shows the Japanese cannot accept older/stronger/more proactive women. Something like that.

'Complicated feelings'? I'm 100% positive he deeply hates us & his work but especially Ayanami Rei, Lol. To be fair, Anno was Hayao Miyazaki's kouhai and Miyazaki is extremely savage, even to his own son. It kind of makes sense that Anno has that disappointed/hostile asian father attitude toward the fans of his work.

100% sure he hates neckbeards.

And he has all the justification in the world to hate the otakus. Quoting Anno:

“For me, I’m trying to work hard for society and people who love anime, but there was this thread on how to kill Hideaki Anno,” the anime creator told NHK. “They kept writing the absolute best ways to kill me, such as, I could be killed this way or that. When I saw this, I stopped caring about everything—like, making anime. I’d had enough. One time, I thought about jumping in front of a car. Another time, I thought about jumping from the company’s roof.” NHK asked what stopped him, and Anno replied, “Because that seemed painful. Dying is fine, really, but I didn’t like the idea of experiencing pain before death.”
100% sure he doesn't hate Rei or Evangelion. If he did, he wouldn't go back and revisit it. Most people don't intentionally go back to relive a difficult period in their life. Anno chose to do so. At worst, his relationship with Eva is complicated but there's no chance he hates it.

Frankly I hate Evangelion and I put it together with the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi as some of the most pretentious work there is. It doesn't say anything profound. Other works can tell stories of character drama and tragedy without the outright weird and unnatural characters of Evangelion. I don't hate Anno at all, I just wish that he can make good anime and manga instead of stuff that the fans will uncritically deem as the works of Anime God.

Not sure why you lump Haruhi with Eva. Eva clearly tried to say something right down to it's title. Haruhi wasn't.

Only similarities they have are insufferable fandoms that these days are largely populated by weebs.

They have certain thematic similarities. EVA tries to deconstruct the mecha genre but in my mind it fails. To puncture the idea that humans can come together to fight an outside threat while entrusting the fate of humanity to a kid. Haruhi also plays with genre tropes of a slightly more modern age to also make fun of them, like we have to have the robot girl, and the ESPer, and the time traveler, all in a school setting. These works are the sort of thing where, just because people say that there is some underlying thought put into the narrative and characters that we must behold them as masterpieces. Even worse people think that other shows and manga are lesser works just because they want to tell simpler or more genuine stories. Anno's right in the sense that the problem are the fans, just that it's worth pointing out that he has legions of fans who think EVA is perfect just as he brings attention to the haters of his work and himself, as pointed out here.

Now that the Kasumi animation is officially out to the public, I gotta say, I fucking love when characters talk dirty in animations. Great work from the VA, as always

Creative preference. Might not be appealing to you but it is to a chunk of people who follow him.
I doubt it's meant to mimic sweat to begin with.
