Day 7 Test version is up on my patreon yea, should be finished with that soon.

I thought about porting it to renpy and started learning it but my voting backers thought it would be too time-consuming and hurt the speed of new content (correct). Also I think some of the charm of the game would be lost, I've grown attached to how it is, flaws and all

Yeah makes sense, though I think it would expand your total addressable market by like 10-30x so could be worth.

As per my review, it's not clear to me what is a good expected result. Are you supposed to be continuously fucking up, like that's the kink here, or is there a solution where you're not being forced into a greater and greater hole. Some expectation setting before the game or benchmarks during the game for certain stats you should have at certain times would be great and could clear up the confusion and uncertainty.

VNs are a hit or miss too, there are some completely horrible VNs like passively flipping through pages of renders. And as you say, this one has a charm of its own, and by simply moving a toon around feels more like a game than if you'd merely flip pages.

Yeah but porn people don't want games, people in the same "field" make more money with less effort just having 3 page long pastebin stories. The whole walking around thing is just making getting to the content an annoyance. Like it's actively putting effort into pissing off your customers and reducing your income.

It depends what the author wants, a slow, steady following of fans and the satisfaction of creating something he or she enjoys, or whoring out to the highest bidder. In any case, I won't just assume that everyone on this site makes "games" only for money, nor that all of us who play them want pastebin stories. At any rate, I won't encourage anyone to sell themselves below their own standards. Finally if a dev really would want money and "customers" (gosh I hate this lingo), then he or she should make incest games with rape and maledom (based on the lowest common denominator taste reflected in the number of likes a game gets here), definitely not lesdom. So, the fact that the dev makes a lezdom game makes me trust him or her, that she really enjoys what she creates and its not only for money.

That most "porn people" are brain-dead, does not mean one has to cater to them. In the long run, dedicated, niche creators will also get their money, but they may also get the respect of their peers and a dedicated following.

Yeah it's all up to what the dev wants to do, I only mentioned it because he talks about polling patreons and taking their opinion. In terms of what the right way to evaluate feedback is, do take note that patreon polling has an obvious survivorship bias.

Ever since the trend of rpgm and unity games, I don't think I've played a single VN...Text feels meaningful to read in a game you control a character with agency. You 'discovered' and 'earned' it, rather than just having it heaped upon you as mindless filler to space out ero scenes.

All good points being discussed here.

Some of my thoughts:

1) The mechanics of the game are designed as one of the main storytelling devices. I could give you text that says "And then Summer fell behind due to the many restrictions imposed upon barangs", or I could let the player experience that themselves. I chose the latter. And since it feels like a failure to the player, you can identify much more with the character. The fact that it feels like a design mistake is maybe validation, because one thing I tried to do was to make it seem like winning was possible in the first place. That's just part of making losing a painful experience and making you feel like Summer herself.

2) About the money. This is a little complicated actually. I make pretty ok money just with my normal career and investments, and I didn't start adult game dev because there is money involved. The reason I made my first game Harshville was 50% because I liked the idea of adult games but there just weren't any games besides Darktoz that scratched my itch (at least that I could find). I think this is what happens with creators in all kinds of genres, they make what they themselves wanted to play/listen to/read. This is different now, with Lezdom and Femdom/Feet being a bigger genre. I like to think I had some part in that but either way, it's a different scene than when I started. 30% was because I enjoy creating and sharing my creations with people who enjoy it. I found this out in the early stages of development when I got my first few backers, it's a very rewarding activity. I would rather cater to their (and my) tastes than attract a wider audience (who I still welcome obviously).

I'd say 20% is about the money, and the thrill of having people be that invested in my work. But still, I've never made very much doing this, and that isn't the prime motivator. If I wanted "more" money, it wouldn't be by doing more adult game dev lol. I still value what my patrons throw my way and I hope what I just said doesn't seem like I don't. I do. It helps me with rpgmaker and Daz assets without using "my own" money. But it's not why I do this.

Yeah, this is a little complicated as well. Maybe I leaned a little too heavily on the fact that people playing this are expecting a femdom game and are probably acquainted with my work already, which might not be true. I definitely didn't set out to make a game where you excel in school and make lots of anime friends, etc. That's a whole different genre. I do add some skill checks that are shown to the player, to show you what you might have in certain paths. Like how

or how barang skill points make different jobs easier and less taxing on your resources of time and recreation. Unlike Harshville which is more of a sandbox, with New Beijing I wanted to tell a more concrete story, and it's not a happy one for Summer. But as I'm not a pastebin writer or whatever, I also wanted to give the player some agency and like I said, feel what it's like to be Summer as the story is unfolding. So maybe that hybrid approach is a little confusing, I understand that critique now.

The challenge with this kink of dom/player failure/etc is that the alternate state needs to be plausible. At least for me. Success needs to be possible for failure to be real. A real world analogue would be, would you rather pay an escort to come "dominate" you, or would you rather be actually dominated by a girl because that's what she wants to do and you have little to no choice. I design my games to feel more like the latter, because that's how I myself fantasize about it.

You definitely had a big part in building up a femdom loving community here, Harshville will always be one of the classics and in my personal top 5 adult games in this site! So I thank you! The only reason I am not a patreon is because for the last couple of years being broke became like a lifestyle for me.

i mirror most of what aseratrix has said, harshville and new beijing are amazing, and i think your work is honestly better than what it was partially inspired by[mana ray], and i think it captures that feel perfectly

i've spent the last few months thinking both games were dead, and even thinking that i knew that HV and NB as-is are 2 of my top favorite all time games

i hope that you can keep up the good work, no matter the pace, and that you're doing well. you've made great games so far

and if you someday make that third game that's in RenPy that i've heard talk of months andmonths ago, i bet it'd be incredible

I want to download this, but from the reviews this seems like a long and confusing game without much instruction.

I generally like fast paced games (by fast paced, I dont mean short games. I just mean a game where it doesn't take 40+mins to reach the next scene. Length doesn't matter) I also like everything to be somewhat straight forward, such as missions to find items and such...

Could I have some opinions if this game will work for me? I really don't want to waste 2 hours just walking around streets, I've done that in a lot of slow paced games, it's rly frustrating.

There isn't really grind like there is in other games. But you do need to walk around, I had a tough time figuring out where to go, what to do, what magical place i need to stand in order to activate the next thing, stuck like 3 or 4 times before giving up. I wish it weren't so because every "scene" is fantastic just... sighs, the whole RPGMness of it all.

I agree about the charm -- I kind of like the exploration/discovery aspect. You can always use Renpy with another game someday if that is your desire and start it fresh with a story tailored towards the engine and hurting content speed for right now, etc. I tend to actually like VNs more (I'm not really a video game type in general and like reading a lot more) but I like this style for this kind of world.

I think I've mentioned this before here or on Harshville thread, but Harshville was I think the very first adult game I ever played (at least the very first one that left an impression on me) and maybe my favorite fetish personally (and my fantasy game) is the idea of a rich and powerful female in charge of swaths of slaves/poor people so the societal inequality from Harshville really got me. :)
