Was scrolling and felt the need to drop my two scents into the above discussion.
I understand the arguments that some ppl will be confused, but that's just a fact for every story. Some ppl just won't get it, being because of not paying attention, lack of life experience etc etc.
But, at the same time, a good story also leaves things open for speculation for the reader. That's how most book clubs even function. You read, then you discuss/speculate on threads that were left open. Every open story thread is not a plot hole. If it's not integral to the main plot, it can be left open or explained through context clues. Even if integral, it could still be explained through context.
I mean, the context clues are still there.
Like for Bex and the MC. The fact that he was in a deep depression after Heather died and mostly hid in his room. Explains why they have not done anything for a while (a few years if I remembered correctly). Which is more than long enough for things to become a little awkward/stale between them.
And we know that Heather has been corrupting Eve and Daye from beyond the grave via the videotapes, also instructing them to not show this to the MC. It would not be out of the question to assume that she also left similar instructions for Bex.
The whole Portia thing, even though it feels like it came out of the blue. It's a mid-story twist. Without it, this would just be a "slice of life" story where nothing really happens. And all the puzzle pieces are there so that it fits into the story. They have the camera/tape, and it also explains why we had to go through the whole job interview. So we would be introduced to Portia's mom. (which at the time felt pointless.)
Explaining things too much could also make a story feel unnecessary long, slow and dragged out.
This form of chapter based releases is a wonky thing. When reading the story as a whole, it makes more sense. But if the reader only reads a chapter at a time, with a few months in between, things will be forgotten. Like how a lot of ppl got upset when the "stepcest" became a plot point. Even though it's been mention in passing a few times already. Ppl were either playing with mods, or they just forgot.
But at the same time the goal is to make a complete story, so that is how it should be written.
