Does anyone know how to get past onijinmaru? I beat him; see a red sparkly icon, interact with it; it says "somethings not right", and gives the options to; "activate sign", or "leave it be". Either option does nothing and the boss just respawns. Any help?

That's it for Onijinmaru's area. The red sparkly icon just respawns the boss if you want to fight him again, and it's present for all bosses in the game.
The Ranch (Onijinmaru's area) is an optional location, you can leave it by going through the very bottom right of the area, it will lead you to an optional area of the sewers.

Stupid question as this has been probably answered, but I downloaded a version that softlocked the game right after the first boss fight after I inspected an object, and it is apparently a problem that some have had before. Is the translated version on the first post of this thread the fixed one, or do I have to do something to fix it?

The bottom right part of the slums has the path to continue on with the main game. You can also get there from the bottom right part of the Ranch like Bulbanych said.
