It's a variety scaled difficulty based on your current level. At one point this can be a bit easier than Nightmare, although it only modifies damage and HP numbers just like the other difficulties.
What button does one use to interact with the orbs in the first room?

I have the doble jump ring but still cannot make it on the ledge on the upper right of the map as shown.

Someone already did. Nothing of value there, so you won't miss much by not exploring. Difficulty in access is probably a dev's oversight, the game was quite buggy at initial release.

The double jump also unlocks divekicking, by pressing down + left or right + jump after the jump. Use that to gain extra horizontal distance.
