I think you're confusing the appeal of the premise with the mechanics of self-insertion, which is generally conveyed with choices and consequences based on what the player themselves want.

I write OoT like a television show screenplay, with set characters and the occasional small branch (go look at the people in this thread complaining about their gallery being broken when it turns out they just missed multiple scenes). CJ is a set character with his own personification, rather than someone you can determine the majority of actions of.
This is also foregoing the debate of who is the actual protagonist of OoT.

That's enormously different from something like MNF or WVM where the camera is glued to the faceless protagonist's forehead and you get choices on which lifeless doll you want to scar you for life.

The people who want more of that kind of WEG are the ones who get upset at OoT not being like that.

Personally I like your game and their games. But I tend to be a lot less screeching maniac than the most vocal harem fans on these forums.

I don't blame anyone for enjoying what they enjoy when it comes to porn, it's not like this is a particularly logical form of media. If your dick says yes and it's not illegal, not a big deal.

I've just had to make it clear in the past that I would much rather jump off a fucking bridge than make MNF or WVM for the people who whine that my game isn't similar enough to those games.

All the games that I would classify as self insert power fantasy type games that I also think are really good are written exactly the way you described where the MC has some sort of personality and there is a proper, well thought out story.

But that being said I have never really been able to self insert into any game/book/whatever so maybe you are right about me confusing the appeal of the premise with the mechanics of self-insertion. Maybe because I do not self insert I have never been annoyed when the MC does something I disagree with but if I were to self insert it would be different.
