Patreon Account Selling Pirated Games - Developers Beware

thats just in theory. how is "give me 1$/3$/5$ a month or you dont get access to my game" anything but selling it ? maybe you dont buy it, you can call it a subscription fee but its definitely far from support. especially with someone like Palmer for example who even has DRM on his game.
plus im pretty sure there are games on Steam that are made with renpy. i doubt all of them are free

i dont think any devs here can sue you if you download their game and present it somewhere else as yours. but the platforms you are using to sell it to others might step in and ban you.

But, I was specifically talking about games that are given for free, you can download them for free and it's left up to the Patron to give how much of their money they want... it's not a subscription to the game it's a support to the dev to keep making the game, you dont have to give a cent and you still get the game. Some Dev's give out a copy to their supporters earlier than a public one, but ultimately you can get the game without spending a cent. So, where's the purchase here exactly?

They aren't contributing money to devs though. They're just copy/pasting download links from here and selling it for $1.

Is it illegal? I don't know. Should it exist? I don't think so.

edit: In any case, I don't think Patreon would ever allow people to sell another Patreon's content.

The profile picture on the Mia Phillip Media YT isn't even the same person on "her" Patreon. If they're going to catfish at least be consistent. At least they tried to make it kind of professional with "MGH" type of logo for Mia Game House YT. lol

Well, on the bright side it looks like he's already on the decline. 12 Hours ago he was sitting on around $185 a month, now he's at $158. Although it could just be because it's the beginning of the month, I'd like to think we've had a hand in it too.

I've been watching since my our first comments (All of which appear to have been deleted already) and he's dropped 8 patrons. I like to think that was all us. I'm about to go on and do another round of shit posting on his comments. =P

I threatened a dcma notice to patreon. Didnt actually do the legal side of it. Explained he was stealing my work and redistributing it for profit. This happened to me before and the user was taken down quick. Though I have heard stories of other guys lasting a long time doing this shit.

Well, they finally blocked me. Someone else will have to take up the good fight. We filed our DCMA as well, but Patreon can be slow as hell. So who knows what will come of it. They're down 10 patrons though since everyone started commenting on their wall.

I already reported them. No theres a big difference from being a leech and actually profiting off someone elses work without permission. I might be a bit of a scumbag because I upload other peoples work without their permission but I can at least say I've never claimed any of the games I've uploaded as my own and tried to make a profit from it.

Right correct me if I am wrong, devs expect to get paid for their time? That op in patreon expects to get paid for their time. Yes the devs have taken more time to produce their games, but that op in patreon has also taken time to set up their patreon site, download and upload the games, that they want money for. Is that op in patreon morally right? NO. But from what I have seen from patreon rules they have done nothing illegal, the only difference I can see is unlike this site that op in patreon wants to charge money for sharing other peoples games.

Actually they have done something illegal. They are charging money for the copyrighted work of others. That's just like the old days when someone would burn CD's of music and sell them on the street corner. People get arrested for that. This Mia Phillips isn't just civilly liable, he's committing a crime by selling it for money.

If Patreon doesn't act, us devs move to another crowd funding site (there are others). If that happens then Mia Phillips is no longer the sole responsible party for the copyright violation. Patreon becomes a party to it because Mia Phillips' page is actually hosted by Patreon, and even uses their domain name. So then we DMCA Patreon, and Patreon then becomes liable if they don't take it down.

Thanks for the alert! @Doom64HD3D mentioned the account on my profile page as well.

Can't say I'm too happy about this. Piracy like here and other websites is fine with me, but straight up charging for content and just reposting links isn't, so I've reported them as well. Sadly, the Trust & Safety Police is quicker to jump on a topless 3D render than outright abuse of their TOS.

One other thing that bothers me and @Bloo already mentioned, is that they tag games with terms that are forbidden by Patreon's content guidelines. Hope they just nuke this page from orbit and don't watch the posts too closely or this could blow back in our faces pretty quickly.
