It's been a long time since I've played and translated it, but I vaguely remember that if you finish the first few fights fast and don't grind them, at some points you'll be under-leveled and do very low damage to the enemy. From what I remember, the more enemy stats you lower before you defeat them, the more exp you will earn from that fight. This means more levels and more levels mean your stats are higher and you do more damage. If you skip a few early fights which are somewhat easy, you will probably have trouble later on due to being under-leveled.
I think I made a cheat somewhere that lowers the enemy stats so you can one-shot them all.
