A few things are likely to change, but a good chunk of the mechanics are likely to remain the same or similar. Knowledge gained on the current code is probably going to be quite transferable to the next version.It's cool that people have figured all of this out, but last time we had a major update, we needed to start entirely new files, so all of these mod and code packages could be rendered obsolete in the coming weeks.
Also, nobody has bothered making any "proper" mods yet. Everything people have posted has just been little 5-minute hacks, typically involving changing just a few lines of code. It's not like any real amount of work will have been wasted.
