This excuse only works if you ignore both the frequency of past updates and current scope of focus. He used to make steady updates with no excuses; now it's a year full of excuses, vague updates, ports of all his old games, and vague messages of 'progress' in an unrelated multiplayer feature that was never even hinted to.Here's the thing, coding isn't easy, especially for something like this. The game is already complex as it is, and having multiplayer is just making things more complex.
This is also on top of doing it by himself mind you.
I agree this is a hard endeavor to accomplish alone, but he had done so in the past, and now he has collected $192,000 over the course of this year and has nothing to show for it. He doesn't want to work on the game, and he doesn't want to stop getting paid for it. He's now acting like one of the many indie game dev crowdfunding grifters out there, and I genuinely feel bad for the people who were tricked into waiting for so long during those first few months of being strung along.
