Which is severe understatement. According to their discord on the beginning of this month "We have over a thousand renders and five animations completed, and about that many more to go" and first time they were expecting to release game was in last year autumn... and then month later... and then month later... and then month later... you get it. Developers lurking in this thread and there more and more of them, and they promise to blown your mind when they do eventually release it, but when it happen... but "very soon and you should subscribe to their patreon and you are a loser if you don't believe them" is about all we have for now.
There's a lot to unpack in your post but mostly what I read is your frustration. That frustration I can totally understand. I know how I feel and feel how the others feel about our progress and can only imagine there being twice as much frustration from the fans of the OG game, if not more.
To be honest with you, we also are just humans and on top of that, some of us don't or didn't have much, if any, experience in game development. We had to learn a lot about internal reporting, feedback and communication in a team living in UTC+2 to UTC-6 and that's not even including language barriers or understanding cultural references. But, to be fair, that's our problem, not a problem for the fans, supporters and future customers.
I joined OHC in April last year and even then the goal with a release in autumn was ambitious. That was my opinion from just looking at the old game and seeing a part of what my job would entail. With the old coder gone MIA and leaving nothing behind, that half a year till release was about what I expected that I needed in time, if I don't have anything else to do. At that time, I didn't know the progress on the other fronts, just that we had people working on it of which I knew Jefferson—a great, awesome, handsome guy, to whom I owe a lot when it comes to how and that I was able to gain a foothold in this industry; does great music too and is way to
invested when it comes to helping other people out; enough about that.
The autumn release date was questionable for me, when I got a bit more insight into the Princess on the Run project. Then we pushed it to Christmas, which is a nice idea, but nice ideas are like certain orifices; everyone has one but sometimes they stink. I am someone that doesn't like to give an ETA for release that far away from the release itself. If we are a month away, e.g. we gave it to our beta testers, then I might be swayed to tell people "Yeah, expect it soon." Until then, there's so much that can go awry, that I just don't feel comfortable with telling people we release on Day X and then… You know what happened, since we didn't release yet.
One of those things that can go wrong is that something unexpected happens. Starting with a PC going up in smokes (metaphorically)—it was luck that I'm in a situation where I had a PC with almost the same hardware and drive configuration, that I could load a backup of my working rig on it so that I could get to work with only some delay and personal discomfort. But, we were four developers (now we are five). And wouldn't you know it, our lead’s apartment went up in flames (literally) and our render magicians hardware had trouble as well. The latter even lost us some of our render progress, if I remember correctly. What I want to say is that we certainly got unlucky. Where others have an issue, almost everyone of us had an issue or two that lead to a delay or set-back in the development. But again, that is our problem, not yours. With all that said, this is not trying to be an excuse for anything. If you are frustrated with the progress or our communication thereof, I can understand and am sorry. We can only promise to try to do better.
Picking apart some of your post, to answer them directly.
Developers lurking in this thread and there more and more of them
That sounds kind of ominous and as if we do that with malintentions.
As far as I know, three of us are reading or have posted here. We are mostly around here, to see the community of the OG game and get feedback from them. In any way that we can, even if it's just reading about random thoughts about the OG game or feedback for our content. I can agree that some of what we read is acknowledged already, while we are either still discussing others or think we should use our discretion as developers to stick with our redesigned Elly, even if she has a less heavy chest.
they promise to blown your mind when they do eventually release it
We are obviously hoping to blow everyone's mind with what we created, but it is most certain that we don't. Opinions and tastes differ and in this small but fragmented industry we call (A)VN that is even more the case. But even if we aren't able to get a perfect Aelrue/10 score, we hope to at least get some people to like Randy interacting with the ladies, others liking our male MC to get to enjoy the warmth of the ladies around him and most of our players to like the adventures our main characters will encounter.
you are a loser if you don't believe them
I hope this post makes it abundantly clear that you are free to have your own opinions about us and our development. That you are free to feel any way you like about the progress we have and present. You or anyone else is certainly not a loser for being doubtful or untrusting. After all, we've seen other games go down the gutter and milkers squeezing the last drop out of their supporters.
What we try is to show the progress we get from one dev meeting to another, as we post about it. We can talk about and address suggestions and feedback in our discord, which we do regularly.
And, that leads to the next part:
you should subscribe to their patreon
You can. I'm fairly certain we never said anything alike "subscribe OR" and if any of our posts sounded like that, I can assure you that is not meant that way.
I myself am of the opinion that, if you have any doubt or uncertainty about us or the project, you should not subscribe to us. If you barely scratch by and could do better spending the money to go to the cinema with a loved one or buy your child a new toy, do that and don't subscribe to us.
If at some point we release and you think, "hey, that's nice," then we ask that if you can support us, that you do so. Not as an obligation but the same way any developer hopes that you throw them some breadcrumbs. That is not meant patronizing, but literally, that every penny helps the development.
We are truly grateful to all our patrons, subscribers, and supporters of all kinds. To those who have supported us in the past, those who continue to support us, and those who will hopefully join us in the future.
