When someone starts chirping that devs are milking, I generally take it as meaning that they'd like to kill the game.
They're always suggesting that backers should stop supporting, and if that happens then the dev likely loses motivation to stick with the current project because nobody seemingly wants it anymore.
By the point when there's an exodus of supporters, the developers should probably realize that people were likely upset or disappointed about something. Otherwise, it's the same as out-of-touch corporate executives scratching their heads and refusing to understand why a product of theirs is failing despite plenty of customer feedback. (Then again, one lead developer for Bungie admitted they try to ignore reviews and just pay attention to sales... yes, seriously.)
There's a project right now that started up a while back, came out with an alpha demo and beta demo, started teasing art assets, built up a bunch of supporters.... then nothing for months. Only an update a few days ago (not even on their patreon, just the game store page instead) showing that they brought another person in to help with the game. Supporters have started to trickle back out now, and there's NO WAY the developers don't know why. Sure, they aren't making much money to split amongst themselves, but it's not a good way to start out. (Their monthly patreon income has already almost been cut in half from folks losing patience and trust.)
