it seems skipping text isn't always available when you have read this text before which is kind of annoying since we do have to explore all story options to get everything in the gallery

Does anyone have a version of the game with all the scenes unlocked? Just got a new pc and I don't really want to have to go through ALL the playthroughs again :p

Sounds like one of those times where "you ask that for a friend" :p

I followed this WT (and other WTs) as best as I could but even then I couldn't unlock everything in the gallery.
So I just extracted the Renpy package and checked what I couldn't unlock

Just finished the game and didn't really like it.
Just words and words with barely any artwork.
Then the game suddenly ends after 2 hours.
Felt like playing an abandoned early alpha - not even remotely like a completed game.
I feel something might have gone wrong in your playthrough.

Taste is subjective, and if you didn't enjoy the game there's not much anyone can do about that, but with regards to the more factual statements you made in your review I'd like to say a few things:
Can't rename MC or hide textbox background without mods.
Press 'H' to hide the textbox. Renaming an MC is subjective, but hardly a con.
There is very little artwork... it feels like maybe 10 character sprites and 10-20 hand-drawn images. Some of the backgrounds are just 3D scene screenshots + filters.
This is the main reason I'm replying. Even if you don't count variations (many of which are quite complex) there's over 100 unique works of art in the gallery alone. If you count unique artwork used for establishing scenes, but not included in the gallery, that number gets around the 130 mark. All hand-drawn. No recurring background is "just 3D scene screenshots + filters".

Anyone can literally open the in game gallery or the art folder of the game and see your claim is wrong.

Your choices also don't really matter except for 1 choice at the beginning and 1 at the end (resulting in the 4 different endings).
And just as you feel the adventure finally begins (about 2 hours) the game is already over.
I assume the first choice you mean is whether or not to lay low, and the 4 different endings are Abandon, Release, Betrayal, and Challenge? If so then you're wrong. The opening choice only effects variations (except for Challenge). The "1 at the end" probably means the decision to let Carmen go or to abandon the mission? If so then that covers Abandon and Release, but none of the variations within them. To get Betrayal you would have to deny Carmen during the negotiation scene, or to work the night shift at the end of day one. To get the Challenge ending you have to lay low, let Carmen suck your dick, then admit to Glasha that you're losing control of the situation, and then pretend to listen to Carmen, and then choose to risk everything to poison her again.

Even within the same endings, the variations change things. There's a big difference between leaving alone with Glasha, and leaving with the entire gang and getting the wholesome epilogue with Crow. There's a big difference between joining Carmen's army as an Officer, and becoming Crow's Knight, even if both are "Release" endings. I'm not even getting into how your choices throughout the game can effect the scenes you get and their variations either, even though that's where most of the game's content is, this is just the endings I'm talking about, and you're wrong.

The game's not for you, that's fine. You don't need to fabricate reasons why you didn't like it. Something can have a great deal of effort and technical ability put into it and still not appeal to every person, or even most people. There's a lot to critique in Sanguine Rose, it's far from perfect, but the claims you've made here and in your review simply don't reflect the game at all.

"All hand-drawn" definitely isn't true.

The attic background clearly is traced 3D. They UV mapping on the walls and everything being geometrically perfect are a dead giveaway.
The bar scene background is subtle but there is a 90° seam where the textures don't line up.
And on the cellar door background I'm pretty sure the right wall has anisotropic filtering artifacts.

In terms of character sprites is true that there are many variations with eyes mouths and arms, but ultimately the amount of base sprites is very low.

By the textbox cannot be hidden I mean you can't make it transparent (while still seeing the text) without mods.

And by choices not really mattering I meant they don't affect what ending you get. It's true you get different scenes/variations, but the 4 endings are ultimately decided by only 2 choices - according to guides.

I'm not "fabricating reasons I don't like it".
I simply dislike that the game ends after spending a few days in a house.
With all the world-building it feels like there's at least 5-10 chapters missing here and the house is just an intro to the story.
Suspiciously absent here is any mention of your claim that the game only has 10-20 hand-drawn works of art in it. I'm going to assume you've dropped that.

Same goes for the backgrounds being "3D with filters" now it's "traced". You've moved off the point entirely. The amount of difference between "3D with filters" and "traced" is already plenty but even then you're off the mark anyway. Of course everything isn't painted by hand. Do you have any idea what a waste of time and resources that would be? I said they weren't 3d screenshots with filters, and they're not.

I'm not sure what your standard is for the number of sprites being "very low" but that's a subjective point I couldn't really care about. I've enjoyed plenty of VNs with like four base sprites with minimal rendering. I can't really argue with your taste if you require more than that.

but the 4 endings are ultimately decided by only 2 choices - according to guides.
I already explained why this isn't true, not even about the variations, just about the actual ending paths themselves. You cannot get the betrayal endings only via the first choice and the choice at the start of day 3. In fact, both Betrayal variations don't even have the opening day 3 choice. You cannot get the challenge endings only via the first choice and the choice at the start of day 3. The penultimate decision in Challenge replaces the day 3 opening choice. The Wholesome ending requires several specific choices to be made between the start and ending choices. Crow's Knight ending requires four specific choices and removes the final choice entirely also. Half of the most unique endings bypass the final choice of the game.

I simply dislike that the game ends after spending a few days in a house.
The game is designed to be replayed multiple times, with each playthrough revealing more content and expanding on the story. It seems like that isn't your cup of tea though, and that's fine.

By hand-drawn images I mean fullscreen drawings that aren't a background + character sprites.
10-20 seems about right there.

Still makes "All hand-drawn" an untrue statement.
So to clarify, you're saying this:

this:

and this:

are "background + character sprites"?

Your criticism is that every piece of art doesn't have a 100% hand-drawn background?

No, but I encountered only 10-20 of those in my playthrough.
I didn't play all possible routes or hand-count the art I saw.
The game is designed to be played several times, though. Saying the game only has 10-20 hand-drawn artworks is like saying Dark Souls only has one boss fight because you died and turned it off. Like, you're critiquing the amount of content, and the lack of choices, when you never even bothered to look for either. If you replayed with different choices, you would have gotten that extra content you were looking for lmao.

Are you guys making a new game ? Or a sequel to sanguine ?
We're currently working on a completely different game called Joystick Bliss.

I think it might have been H.L. Mencken to say that Cellar Door is the most beautiful combination of words in english.
The literature nerd in me very much enjoyed having a cellar door be so prominent in the game.

I just want to say that Carmen's scene in Lost Chapters is so fucking hot, thank you for creating the game once again ♥
wonder how long she's actually being sentenced to being bound & caged though

Anyways, can't wait for the new game Joystick Bliss to be completed! ♥

Also, is female submission/BDSM a major theme of the game?

Thrilled to hear you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun writing Carmen's "Comeuppance" ;)

Submission & BDSM are big parts of Joystick Bliss, and there's plenty of female characters involved in that yes. The sex is a bit more grounded, since it takes place in the present day, but there's definitely going to be scenes which push the envelope of what we've done before.
