If I understand everything right the update system requires installation of additional files to the base game. Is there a way to install everything at once?

First, you need to download the full 0.16
Then, the updates:
You need to install each update separately.
OR, download the compressed version that is already full 0.23

Are saves not compatible across versions or did I do something wrong with install? Last time I played was v.19 and it seems like the saves don't want to load in v.23, clicking "ignore" on the error screen just starts a new game.
