Basically, this game in of itself is a joke, but not a well-written one as it has absolutely no direction. Both characters stop giving a shit, I mean they stopped caring about whatever the whole point of the game was or whatever it's trying to be achieved by the plot.
You can't interact with the world, you move but to progress, you need a key that you can't get because of this issue. Many problems plague this game, apparently it only works on certain items.

Same issue with controller. I did a quick search in steam and apparently its an alt-tab issue. I played in window mode, so might have been that too. Try fullscreen and no alt tab. I didnt bother trying again personally.
