I just played "A Father's Sins" based on it being recommended in the games list in the 1. post. I have aborted after a few hours and feel like I wasted my time.
Yes, it's "story first", I just don't think the story is very good, or the characters very interesting (though shoutout to the barrista - she was a standout for me). The world building was pretty cliche driven, and very thin. And the characters didn't seem internally consistent to me, instead just acting by rule of cool, what would be funniest, or most melodramatic each moment. The random horniness of the MC was offputting too, mostly because it was so inconsistent (like the "Do I want to waste my mana on a spell to make her clothes transperent?" choices. wtf...).

It just never felt like an internally consistent story (and characters!) pulling me in, which is what I thought this thread is looking for.
So, just thought I'd voice my disrecommendation here. :)
Thank you! I am on the edge of playing it or not, but there are a few things I'm not sure about:

- I played this dev's previous games and honestly, the whole romance/seduction thing was... loose... at best. Is the main story the same way he wrote on his other games?
- Noted a lot of criticism on his thread for not having sex scenes, and then he made an alternate story (like a what if?) with basically pure porn content, is there finally anything lewd in his main story (A Father's Sins) or is it still just teasing?

[T]he Dev committed (IMO) a cardinal sin[:] he broke the readers trust ... by attempting to imply the death of a love interest[.]
I disagree with you that killing a love interest breaks a readers' trust. Particularly with a game like Intertwined that repeatedly attempts to make an emotional impact. Making you care about a character and then killing them is very powerful story-telling, and has been used over and over again in stories throughout history to make them memorable. Did the writers of Old Yeller commit a cardinal sin by shooting the dog? Of course not. That was great story-telling that would probably still make me cry today. Sure, a lot AVNs have a certain light-hearted tone to them where killing an LI would feel out of place and WOULD violate the readers' trust because you have to establish your story's tone early on. But Erynn's death in Intertwined, particularly since Nyx had already set up the dangerous stakes for her, would have fit the story. There's no rule just for AVN's that says you can't kill a love interest.

However, I do think that Nyx broke a promise to the readers by including that ending scene, and I think that was her lowest moment as a game dev, but for the opposite reason. She told us that Erynn had been seriously hurt, likely killed and created great emotional terror for us. Then at the beginning of the next episode we find out it was a big nothing, it was some girl that had nothing to do with anything. That was a failure of writing because now I really can't trust her if she makes any kind of promise like that again--it won't have the same emotional impact because I'll think, "Ah, she's just pulling my leg again."

At the same time, games with absolutely mediocre at best stories are topping the charts left and right - and it's because of how good the visuals in those games are.

If you look at the games that get talked about the most? (outside of this thread) They're almost always the best looking ones - because those are the ones being played the most.
What drives me nuts are games that are beautiful and/or sexy that get accolades for their writing simply because they are beautiful and/or sexy. I'm not naming any names but there are a lot of big games that would make that list.

Yes, I can see both arguments working about Intertwined.

After spending a long time grieving for Erynn, it just isn't her... and we even know nothing about who it was and why she died.

Yes, I agree that that was bad writing. In either side. Killing Erynn without a scene, or for a scene, just as a plot point, would have been really bad, like really BAD. Not only because (for me) she's the "story", but because it was too soon and too unexplained, so, it would be a futile gesture, a waste so to say.

I agree also, that the real problem wasn't the death of an LI, but how gratuitous it would be to do it that way. She's the MC's first love, for my MC only rivaled by her "possibly not sister turned roommate and maybe lover", so, for me the game would be over. For no reason, with no payday, with no resolution.

I've read countless books and movies and TV-shows with the death of a LI, the common denominator, they are meaningful. That one, that way, at that point, wouldn't be.

Peace :)

P.S.: Thanks for correcting my punctuation, I never had any formal teaching of English, learned it on my own, so, I make mistakes. Sorry and thanks.

What makes it even worse at least to me it was basically a random NPC that was killed. Yeah we had some content with the character that was killed but she barley even in the game at all. Because of that I don't care for this "NPC" that was killed. Would of been more meaningful and feel less random and pointless to me if we had some indication she was another girl that was working with Erynn or something to do with the people forcing Erynn to be an "escort" or give us a little bit of who she was and what she was doing before her death. Instead we randomly see a cliffhanger ending and it ended up being some no name that we meet twice once on the plane and someone our mother hired that died. Even if her death ends up being used later in the story it honestly feels real random and pointless to me. Sure one could argue could cause issues later in the story for the MC or his mother but without any indication who she was or doing , I can't help but feel it's randomly placed there for no real reason and doubt gonna cause any issues for the MC or the mother in the story.

I have not played the dev's other games, so I can't compare them, sorry. I didn't note much romance/seduction going on in this one though, just the MC randomly getting horny. What do you mean about the main story? This game's main story is about mystery and fighting, not about romance or love (there is also a very weird childhood friendship, but it's just the same two events shown over and over).
Yeah, I saw the critisisms for too few sex scenes as well, and it's true. Besides some nudity shots (including sexualising a tortured dead woman), there is only a handjob and a titfuck by the nurse, that's it. That said, I wanted to play the game for the story (battle nuns fighting against the forces of darkness), so I would have been completely fine with no sex at all. But only if the story and characters were more compelling then they are. Flipping that argument over, more sex scenes wouldn't have made me enjoy a game with bad writing either.

So, a fake VN mode. Thanks, but no, thanks.

I can, with some effort, accept a few free roams. But, mini games? Event based? No! I do play Badik, without the mini games and just the free roams are the bane of my existence. Truly NOT for me. Are the Events even canon? As in the story is changed by it's result, or, it's just a closed Event? Like a trip to Vegas?

Anyway, I'll think about it, but, probably not.

Peace :)
BaDIK free roam is annoying.
Well it's annoying during playthrough 3,it's alright during playthrough 1

Also mansion game is just a timesink during PT 4 onwards

Noping's NSL is not like that though, so far.
The freeroam is limited to very few rooms every time it appears.

It's not like DIK Ep9 halloween party

The thing is - PP's initial support? Wasn't because of it's story. I'm not saying it has a BAD story - I'm just saying that is NOT why people checked it out. And a lot of the "discovery" you talk about? A lot of it comes from people playing games, and then talking about them. (Seriously. Discussions on forums like this, or reddit, or discord are a HUGE driver of people checking out games to begin with) - and while people may have played PP and enjoyed the story - that's not why they tried it in the first place.
No i agree with you.
For me, it's because of it's humor. Comedy is top-tier.
And unlike Above the Clouds story, i like Passion far better. So Passion is in my mind even though Clouds is equally as funny if not moreso.

Generally speaking, i don't like incest story cuz usually AVN incest story has nothing about it to say. So it's pretty boring to read Incest so, Passion over Cloud. You're right that "story" won in a roughly equal contest

Going back to Visual being number 1, initially i thought i could play any game with any art as long as the story interest me.
Until I found this one DAZ game, i don't remember the name but the people doesn't look like people. The proportion of their face. I don't remember the name of the game cuz i didn't play it.

And that's when I realized, yeah... visual is important to some degree. At the very least I want the people to have the proportion of people's face. And also for non-daz game, I do prefer normal human proportion than breasts and butts monstrosity. It's fine if it's an alien or a different species, when it's human set in the real world, it takes me out of the game.

On your number 2 rank, "sex", yeah how i wish that isn't true.

Generally speaking I want quicker update release and sex animation, based on devs patreon posts, seems like it takes a big chunk of development time. Moreso if their GPU is inadequate. And then there's fixing it if it's clippy and other things like that.

I might not be the average AVN player in this aspect cuz for me it wouldn't change anything at all if the sex animations in most games gets eliminated and changed into blank screen with texts "they do this and that, and then they sleep together".

Sex animation is the thing i care least about that also equally take a high development time.
I don't even care about BaDIK animations and most games is nowhere near that. If I can get a BaDIK episode two months early and not have sex animation, i would take that all of the time.

I'm ruling it out based on experience. Support from f95 is significantly less than 10% of the overall support I've received over the course of 2 games. It's not worth the headache of making sure people who play games for free have a good experience. That's just the blunt truth. I don't mind discussions - and occasionally someone here finds a bug or 2 which I always fix asap - but aside from that, it's not worth my time.
yeah nah, i agree with you.
There are some devs i patron that i saw replying a lot on f95 (just like me yesterday) and my observation based on the way they reply, it might burn them out. So i said to some of them, "maybe consider spending less time on f95"

For devs that can just checked out, being on f95 is okay but for devs that replies to comments here and there, drunk or not, high or not, if it gets to them, it's better to leave this place after like, three updates or so

Yes, I can see both arguments working about Intertwined.
problem with Intertwined, to me, is that it would be more interesting to read it as an actual web chapters. Cuz those has regular release. Like on wattpad or somewhere.

Playing a game like Intertwined and yet only play it once every 6-8 months is pretty long to me. Good for Nyx but man, i can't stand the wait.

I won't argue against your opinions on the game and its characters - in part because I can share some of them. However, despite its obvious flaws, I like the story and the way it's being told: in fact, I'd say the storytelling, the musical ambiance and the cinematic action scenes make up for the thin world and the hollow characterization. And it's clearly a 'story-focused' game, because no one said those stories must be perfectly told, just well enough to keep things interesting and not be trashed away by porn-logic. Obviously, in this case, it wasn't enough for you, and that's fine, no one should feel forced to keep playing a game they are not enjoying. Different tastes and expectations and so on.

But I do feel the need to point out that 'sexualizing a tortured dead woman' is totally NOT what can be seen in that scene. A naked, tortured dead woman is depicted, but she's not sexualized in any way. Her tortured body is there to shock the MC and make him realize that innocent people are being brutally killed while trying to protect him, and also that he is indeed their leader, a person who can swear them into the sisterhood and even help them reach their 'heaven' after death. There's absolutely zero sexual vibes in that scene.

Thank you! I am on the edge of playing it or not, but there are a few things I'm not sure about:

- I played this dev's previous games and honestly, the whole romance/seduction thing was... loose... at best. Is the main story the same way he wrote on his other games?

I didn't play his previous games, but whatever you found in them, I can guarantee you is not present in this one. Basically, because there's no intention of creating a porn/lewd game at all - maybe it started that way, but now the focus is on telling a 'serious' story with some comedy reliefs and mature content (mostly horror and random nudes), which may include establishing a relationship with some girl at the end. This creates an odd effect, as the first part of the game seems to have almost every ingredient for a run-of-the-mill mindless sex game about a horny MC trying to take advantage of a weird power. However, as the story evolves, things get more serious and there's little room for romance/seduction. This wasn't entirely planned, but more like an unexpected consequence of the story growing bigger than the dev had initially envisioned - at some point, he just realized mindless sex wouldn't fit this story anymore, which is why he chose to create the other lewd game: to offer some sex scenes to his patrons, who were told A Father's Sins would include way more lewd content of what it actually includes. On the other hand, this change in the game's focus can work surprisingly well as an example of subverting expectations (you thought you came to play a fuckfest but then the MC realizes this is some serious shit and forgets about his initial horniness), and some people may find that turn to be quite interesting.

Anyone here have try Little Regina?

That's definitely a story-first game. It's an Adult VN in the sense that it's violent, instead of the usual adult definition of sexual.
Also, there's very little intercourses in it

I don't really enjoy the premise of the game but the main story beat is good, and it is engaging.

I haven't finish reading it yet but in Episode 3, I was really impressed at what happen there, I just gotta share it here right away.

I like reading that stories that make sense. By makes sense I mean stories that are consistent in that world.
Which is also my big issue with Eternum's MC monologue about the women characters, it isn't consistent. Reading too much of that gets tiring. If Eternum doesn't have some nice action scenes, I would've drop it by now.

What was being told in Episode 3 was consistent with the thing we learned about that world and about this one character. I don't want to elaborate on it (the way I usually do with other games) cuz I was really impressed when it was told and if any of y'all ever play it, feel free to tag me so we can discuss.

I honestly think f95 synopsis of the game divulge too much, and i also do think just in general, AVN overview i read in f95 is too long.
I'd prefer these overviews to be like, 3 sentences at best. Not 3 paragraphs.

The thing you all need to know of the game overview is this,

Jack Jensen, an ex-military, drives his old car into the City of Little Regina, searching for clues to find his friend, Alexandra's missing sister, Lucy.
On controlling the MC, you can choose between 2 options, somewhat Nice or extreme Asshole.
If Friends in Need Asshole path is blackmail and coercion, Little Regina's Asshole path is eliminating people.

Friends in Need MC is just a Guy with money and then he decides to do things for his surroundings. We can choose for him to be Nice to his surroundings and help people. Or we can choose for him to be an Asshole and coerce instead. Both because he has money.

Little Regina MC is a Man with PTSD that is canonically cold. We can choose for him to be Nice by letting people get away, or we can choose for him to be a pragmatic Asshole by not having loose ends through eliminating some people. Both because this Man is damaged by the war.

Up until Episode 3, it's really hard for me to pick the Nice options, I do do it cuz I want to see where the Nice path lead and also I don't think I have time to play both paths.
But generally speaking, given what the readers are told of the MC and given the MCs canonical actions that happen in the game prior to our inputs, not being pragmatic is actually going against who the MC is as a person.

It's more me controlling him the way I want despite his character's setting and actions in game.

I'll draw a comparison to Our Red String a bit. The Female Main Character Lena's dialogues and monologues (and even background now in this latest chapter) changes depending on how we play them. If we play them as a nerd and a prude, she thinks like a prude. On the other hand if she is promiscuous, her background is also promiscuous.

So if I play a nerd Lena, the game's character setting of her is believable to me.
If I play a "chad" Ian, the monologue of Ian changes too by a bit. That makes me buy this idea that I can choose which version of Ian and Lena exist on that playthrough.
That those version of them can actually exist. It keeps me focused reading the story.

This game though the Asshole path is truer to his canonical actions displayed in-game prior to our input so, it breaks my believability and suspension of disbelief too when I choose Nice options. It makes me went "I'm the one that choose that action, this character is not gonna choose that option without my input".

Can you all guess when I wrote this post?
Right after I had to choose between picking Nice option or Asshole option to these 2 people in Episode 3
It took me out of the game, so I took a break and write this post

There's very few games in AVN that I know of so far where the "Adult" stands for things that aren't "sexual".
A big reason I still read this thread and not check out of it is to one day find games like Little Regina. Where the A on AVN stands for "adult" that isn't a euphemism for sex.

The sex part of AVN is the most boring part of AVN to me. I'd be 100% okay with 99.5% of game out there if the sex part is taken out or just have black screen placeholder on it and just have texts. And on this I'm specifically thinking of BaDIK in my head. BaDIK takes far too long to develop per update because there are so many paths. And with each paths, there needs to be sexual animations. Those animations does nothing for me.

This Little Regina game fulfill that "other Adults" aspect. The Adult part delves into something that isn't "sex". So, do try it out.

I tried Little Regina but ended up dropping it. I didn't like the forced romance with the MC and foxy think that's her name. Not sure if she counts as a loli but was borderline one at least. But the romance between them ultimately made me feel uncomfortable. If I would try it again id have to probably ctrl skip through the romance between them.

And on this I'm specifically thinking of BaDIK in my head. BaDIK takes far too long to develop per update because there are so many paths. And with each paths, there needs to be sexual animations. Those animations does nothing for me.

This Little Regina game fulfill that "other dults" aspect. The adult part delves into something that isn't "sex". So, do try it out.
I have, and I also agree with you on most of your points.
However, I went for the "nice" path on Little Regina, and I have to say that the difference is not that much... it changes mostly how intense is the scene you are playing.

So, for example, instead of sodomizing to death a man with a baseball bat, you limit it to gut him out like a pig... but it still is not like you become Mother Theresa and start a forgiving journey by choosing not to let MC's inner monster out.

Earlier this week somebody posted something about a game needing awesome renders for having support, and I think this would be a good example of a game that does not have them, yet still has good support from the community.

The renders/art are average at best, but the story is so good (IMHO) that I oversee that detail because I enjoy the story very much.

One thing that I also love from that game is precisely what I criticized the most from FiN: The MC does evolve by interacting with the several women around him (note I don't say LIs as there are several that are not love interests yet they play an important role in the story). It has a main arc that evolves regardless of the sex scenes (which are very few).

The way the MC gets involved in the relationships with the women around him is also different. While having a common approach (being protective) each situation is different and he addresses each case differently.

I also appreciated that it is one of the few games where any other male than MC is not evil, stupid, gay, impotent, or a combination of the former. There is at least another male there that "gets some" without raping, blackmailing, or having to resort to any corrupt actions, and (to my disappointment) the girl he gets is not even a LI.

There are still a few elements from the story that could use some polishing, but they do not affect the overall direction or the storytelling.

Anyway, that's one of the games I do not wait for 2 or 3 releases to play again, and I keep up to date with its releases.

Hang in there in Little Regina.

The story is awesome. Foxxy may be young, but not childish, and she grows a LOT quite fast.

I may be recalling it wrong, but I think it has only 2 LI's and sincerely, none more are needed.

I do recommend that game on the Nice path. Can't speak for the other one, I didn't play it and don't think I will.

Peace :)

It has 2 confirmed (Foxy, Christa), and there are at least another 2 that are evolving in that direction, yet they are not exactly rushing to get there.

The last Sovereign should be there. It definitely outshines most games on the list if not all. Its a masterclass story.

While I agree it is a masterpiece, I'm unsure it could be on the list.
The whole story is about a dude that needs to bang the women on his harem (like in power/physically needing) to gain power and save the world, so I could not remove the sex/lewd content without affecting very significatively the story.

Yet the whole background, the lore, the character development, and the gameplay are just amazing.

Ok. I'm going to be a bit weird here, but, the intention is good.

Foxy is a GREAT character. After I stopped being weirded out with her age and physical appearance, I found some depth and interest there. Now, both as a MC in these games, and in IRL, I've never been attracted by girls that age, not even when I was that age. I know, I know, I was weird and still am.

Christa is, was, and will be my target. I will NOT refuse Foxy, but what keeps me in the story is Christa (I think you can't have one without the other anyway). Speaking only of physical appearance, I find Christa WAY more interesting. Her story, her personality, is vastly superior to anyone else in the game.

This is, obviously, a very biased opinion, that by no means attempts to color yours. Just saying what my thoughts are.

I can't really enjoy games with loli. My whole being feels revolted by it. The fact that I didn't get those feelings in Little Regina, is a testament to how not childish Foxy acts. Young, yes, but child, no.

Peace :)

honestly this is kind of why I dropped the game. I was only interested in Christa but with how foxy acted even tho she is a good character made me feel uncomfortable when it came to the romance and the fact she is forced made it worst for me. That and well her loli appearance made it harder to accept and feel comfortable to me. I might try the game again much later when we got alot more Christa content and ctrl skip parts that are to much for me.

I can't find that game, do you have a link?

I find a Sovereign, but it doesn't seem to be the same. Or is it?

Peace :)

I do think part of the storytelling that is enjoyable is that it takes this trope and really deconstructs it in the story. He isn't power hungry to have sex with others, infact it makes you feel for characters whose literal name is Qum. In fact that character is one of the sweetest characters in the story, to the point you will fight to protect her innocence. I think the Last sovereign does adult stories in a way that I enjoy, sex is considered a positive but not gratuitous way. I don't think there are many stories that have impacted me the same way as the world building in this story.

Ofcourse for people that want a story, this is not for them. There is heavy gameplay elements that is not everyone's cup of tea.

I know. I'm conflicted because the story is focused on using sex to gain power to develop the MC's mission in the game, so as I said you can't remove the sex without affecting the story.

However, the way it is structured is logical and despite being an imposed condition (because of the premise) no love interest is forced into you (maybe except for the first one).

The MC does not look (actually is more reluctant, and even tries to avoid it) to have a harem, and getting one is the result of the whole context of the story. The LIs are not attracted to a magical penis, and they do not lose their personalities after finally giving in to being with him.

It has a fantastic story, very human (within the context of the game), and I loved how each character is developed.

If there were voting, I'd say The Last Sovereign deserves at least an honorific mention here, and I'd 100% agree on having it on the "official" list.
