Just wanted to say I have been a fan of Gay Visual Novels for a long time. I just finished reading your work and must say that Straight!? is my absolute top favorite. You have impressed me beyond belief. I think I am in love with all of your characters, character development is amazing. I am the emotional type, but I think this is the first time that a visual novel actually made me cry in parts, and not sad tears but just an emotional release. I truly wish I could become a patron but have been out of work since March 13th because of this damn pandemic but please rest assured that once I am back on my feet, you will see me on your page again. Wish you the best and keep up the outstanding work. Thank you for all that you do.
yo, thanks for the kind words. They mean a lot. Especially for someone who seems to have been through a lot of VNs. I actually haven't played a ton of them but the few I did play left me wanting a deeper connection with things. I'm glad that the approach here resonated with you. I'll take the fact that I made you cry as a compliment-- there's a few scenes in here where my ass cried writing them so thank you.

In terms of patreon donations, don't worry about it. I sincerely hope that you're safe during all of the crazy state of things and you need to take care of yourself first. Don't worry about donations. It's been a long day today and your words did far more than a few dollars could have so thanks for that. Sometimes just knowing the story reached someone goes a lot further than donations do. You took the time to coment and I appreciate that. I do wish you the best tho and I hope things swing upward for you on the work thing. stay safe

I saw some people mention traps. I don't see any in the screenshots(unless the doctor is one), do they refer to the main character or are there other girly looking romantic interests?

I'm not gay, but I have to say I was intrigued by this game. I started playing it and i was pretty surprised, no sex from the start. Just a good story that puts you in a bit of a pickle. A good story, even if at one point you wonder if there's going to be any action between the two protagonists. In short, I like these stories of university, encounters and difficult choices. Keep it up, I like stories like that, even if it's gay...

I don't think i've ever seen anyone mention traps anywhere. not sure where you saw that at but it's not accurate. The game is m/m content only. No girl romantic interests and none planned. I wanted to focus on telling a specific story with this game for my own reasons so there's only one route

Hey, thanks a lot. I always appreciate the feedback from someone who isn't typically into gay games. I think mostly because (especially on this site) I got a lot of shit early on because everyone wanted sexual content. Interestingly, now that's very much in the minority of suggestions and most people forget about it. It's even better when I call pull in someone who's not into the gay content and still hook them with the story. Just means a lot and i really appreciate you giving the story a shot so thanks for that :)

Sorry, I have no self-control.

But to your point, I think it is a testament to your artistic vision. People are drawn to your work even if it isn't what they typically seek out. Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks a lot. Every once in awhile i'll get someone on here that complains with the lack of adult content and posits that I'd have more followers or make more if i included more sex stuff. Awhile back someone even said the game was "going in the wrong direction" which made me laugh because those people don't see the DMs I get where the game has positively affected people. At the same time, I have plenty of followers that aren't necessarily in it for the adult content that the story-alone has attracted. So it probably evens out and the vision is consistent with what I wanted for the game. It doesn't really have anything else out there like it and I think that makes it unique. It's in a category of it's own and whether you like that or not, I appreciate that about it.

I have no follow-through, so even though I've noticed him here before and meant to say this, it's only happening now.

UnrulyDogBoy isn't just a regular commenter! He's making a game Demitransference that also is gay and well-written and at college!

Check it out! Unless you'll make the wrong choices on the polls currently running in that thread... in that case, wait a few weeks.

Aaryn "Straight?!" is great! Though I'm worried I might think "Str8?!" was gr8er :giggle:

(Hope I'm not out of line saying this) on Patreon, we were told that the update would be within a week. I am really looking forward to this next update.

OMFG these damn babies need to relax and utilize that patience I hope they have. Aaryn, I understand that you like to be very active and communicate with your fan base, but on f95 there are a lot of adults whining, and trying to convince themselves that it's just them expressing their anticipation e_e.

Sorry. I think my post was taken the wrong way. I was responding to the previous post and letting them know that an update was coming soon. Reading my post now I can see how:

" we were told that the update would be within a week "

could be taken as :

"What is going on? We were told a week. Its been 4 days and that is basically a week. I need my update now."

but it was meant to be read as :

"Hey buddy, good news the update is coming soon. We've been told it will be approximately a week or so. Let us rejoice and celebrate."

Again, sorry for any misunderstanding and for making the entire F95 community look bad. {{hugs}}

So, in general, I didn't take offense to the post. I take it as a compliment that people are interested and excited for the update. Generally speaking, most people don't realize how much time goes into game development, especially when you're doing this solo or in small teams. There is a certain segment of the population that view themselves as critics and post game reviews, make suggestions to improve indie games like this without actually realizing how difficult those changes can be, or just generally demand updates be provided freely to them on a faster basis. I work usually between 40-60 hours a week on this game and frequently will take vacation days from my regular job specifically to work on the game. IT's a lot and there's literally thousands of hours that go into each update-- but that's mostly because I'm suuuuuper ADHD and really struggle with concentration sometimes. I see some reviews on here or posts that remind me of the South Park Yelp episode so some people just seem entitled. Ironically, it's usually those that consistently play the game for free that are the least patient on updates while the paid subscribers are usually sending messages to slow down or take a break. I didn't see the post as entitled or demanding tho :)

Sadly, I think a lot of other game devs are lazy or take advantage of patreon supporters and it gives slower update progress a bad rap. There's a few devs that just work slow to milk money from supporters and that's bullshit. In contrast to most game updates that update every month, the Straight!? updates are increasingly taking longer but are longer than most comparable games. I think the v019 update that I'm working on right now clocks in around 2 hours of story with around 500 new pics. It's quite a bit. But because some devs don't put out lengthy material even after months and months of time, people get antsy and that just generalizes to all game projects.

I do appreciate the interest but I also get anxious when people ask a bunch because it creates hype. I don't deal with hype real well because i still feel amateur af so I'm also concerned it wont meet expectations

I really loved the story so far. It started weakly, but then when they started to get more friendlier, the whole story completely changed, and I couldn't stop reading, reading and reading, and looking forward to what will happen next. I am truly astonished when there are amazing storytellers and all that emotion package with all those different personalities and characters. I simply loved every single one of them. It even puts someone like me, a writer, a shame because I know, how hard it is to pull such unique and grabbing personalities and write them well.

You guys are doing an amazing job, and I am looking forward to the next part of the story.

Thanks a lot. It's always humbling to get feedback from others with writing experience. The beginning does start weak. I will mostly blame my lack of confidence and experience for the slow start. However, I will also blame the genre to some degree. When I started this in October 2017, the majority of adult games were grinding. The initial builds of this game had points associated with the relationship and I honestly hated it. The more I got into the writing, I started to feel the characters and I, personally, became less interested in quantifying the relationship. The real world doesn't operate like that so I moved away from it. I'm a terrible coder, and some fairly critical early feedback I got suggested that I "play to my strengths" and they cited the writing. I was surprised that people thought I could write so I ended up taking my filter off and embraced the power of anonymous writing. That's around chapter 5 or so.

Based on that feedback, I always encourage people new to this to not start a patreon and run polls on what the audience thinks the characters should do. As the writer, go with your heart--youre the one that will reap the consequences--not the audience. I think the style slowly improved when I stopped doing what the genre typically did and went in my own direction.

I'll also credit that shortly after finishing Chapter 6 (I won't spoil but a certain park scene), I ended up bringing on a co-writer with amazing talent and a very different perspective on things. Since then, we've become inseparable friends in this journey and that helps a lot. When you have someone that you trust, but also respect, that knows your wishes and tries to help you accomplish them without trying to take over. It's an amazing dynamic. In short, the two guys that are still helping me with this have helped me build my confidence over the years and have given me amazing experiences to emotionally tap into for the writing.

Next segment should be dropping on patreon in a few days or so.

Well, I personally started to feel the characters much more closely at chapter 4 or 5, I am not sure, they are a bit mixed in my head and from there onward, I've been reading and playing the game for like several days in a row, every time I got the free time. I think you really start hitting the spot after he meets Mikhail and then when you introduce Mikhail's roommate. I will not spoil anything but from there onward, was when things just changed completely in the writing.

You are doing a great job, and I am hoping the story will not end for at least several more semesters. if you need help, feel free to let me know. I understand some coding studying it right now, not really inspired by it but in writing, I am in my own waters as Zack says.

yeah, i was worried if i started the story out as heavy as i wanted it to me, that I would lose people early on. So i ended up starting it the cliched way because people were used to that and slowly tried to add story in and reassure people that it was ok to have an adult game that's not all porn all the time
