don't write what you
don't know'. If the writer has all the social acumen of a
blind ferret, maybe don't write a story built around a protagonist with a (supposed) educational background in psychology?

Stop this. Why? Cause this is a BORING protagonist. Idealized self-insert characters (a.k.a a Mary Sue) are boring for everyone who isn't the author getting off on their own supply. Are you writing bad Star Trek fan-fiction? Cause that's how you write bad Star Trek fan-fiction.

what degree? Certainly not a doctorate, as there was no mention of a thesis paper/review, nor does anyone refer to the MC as a 'doctor'. I don't know if it is the same in every state, but at least in my home state, you're gonna need a masters degree for any sort of counseling work (outside of a church, because there are seemingly no rules for religion in the USA). Part of those requirements is 600 hours of internship. It would perhaps make more sense if the MC here was in the midst of working on their degree, and the camp was part of their internship progress. But, that would have required caring enough about sounding credible to spend one minute on Google doing any amount of research into the field the MC now supposedly has a full-fledged degree in...
