True. I'm not really a fan of stuff like that. The premise makes me feel sort of nostalgic about earlier VNs but stuff like that always ends up being shoehorned in during the climax because the two themes just sort end up clashing in a mismatched fashion instead of a tight juxtaposition. My one and only complaint is the fact that we have yet another contrived 'mafia/drug lord' side plot being built up.
It just feels like a pointless waste of time. I don't want intrigue and danger, I just want a fun summer of youthful exploration and partying. The side plot stuff just slows everything down and drags it out... which I think might be why we see them in damn near every VN...
Aside from that, the characters all have interesting personalities and realistic dialogue that you typically don't find in VN's. My two favorite scenes are Sophie in the pool and Mia/Eve on the couch simply because they felt so realistic. I don't need tons of renders and fancy slow zooms when the writing is this good, I just need the story to be complete before the end of the decade or I'll end up writing this off as yet another grift and move on.
These two definitely have the writing chops to just make it a "fun summer of youthful exploration and partying" they don't really need extra drama on top of that. I mean, damn. So much underlying tension between the characters just bubbling up is enough to keep me interested. Especially between MC and Ms. Hill as well as Mia and Sophie (different kind of tension lol).
Still, it's kind of whatever. It's nothing actually egregious. The "underbelly of society" stuff is just kind of like a "meh" from me. I think we can both agree if that's the only thing about the story then it's already a lot better than a lot of other VNs.
