Status Update #55

Hello everyone!

This week we continued with polishing, editing and clicking pixels.

We ended up dismantling a branching scene with several paths. It felt fun in the scripting phase, but it's a branch that limits playthroughs unnecessarily with needless options. In some ways sure these are great since they offer replayability, but sometimes players might not even realize other paths or content even exists. Or they just play once. So, we decided to make it more straightforward without cutting content or being punishing with the unlockable content later on.

Along with editing and proofing, we also worked on the laptop UI and content. And before you think "Oh great, they are working on extra shit again," this is the first update with the laptop in it. It has a lot of moving parts which could potentially throw issues, and we don't want it to be a buggy mess in the future. Or worse, ugly. Besides, it's also very relevant to the plot.

For example, here's a random news article snippet featuring one of Rosewood's many founders:

There are many locations in Rosewood named after the prestigious Mr. Gooner, such as Gooner Lake, which will be explored in the future. Just a little bit of world building in the background. There's plenty more, but it's of course skippable/missable for the fellows who only play for lewds.

And on the topic of lewds, this week was a pretty good one when it came to editing one of the scenes. We added new renders to show some extra angles that may be of interest, and optimized the animation quality for that scene as well. Overall, feeling good about it. Looking forward to having this scene out for everyone to play.

I'm almost certain the only thing they'll release this month is a special Halloween render. I had a feeling they would keep extending the update cycles more and more. This one has been going on for 14 months, pushing 15. The next one will probably be a year and a half, and so on.

Honestly, they're just shooting themselves in the foot. They build up all these expectations and increase the pressure, so when the update finally drops, it's almost guaranteed to be just as underwhelming as the last one. Not because it will be bad, but because the development cycle is so drawn-out that it can't possibly live up to the hype.

Honestly the updates haven’t ever been bad (imo) just poor for the time sunk into them. Seriously they should take at most half the cycle. AT MOST. So far dpc is like the only dev who matches the year long cycle with befitting content and quality and thats with him packing in pointless and sometimes complex to code mini games as a one man show...

The only ones who shoot themself in the foot are the whiners that over fixate on this game for months and convinced themself it's gonna be bad. You guys sure won't be able to enjoy it no matter what it end up to be. You would be better go wait for something else or relax a little bit, does it really matter how long it take when you really thing about it? It's just one videogame not a cure for cancer.

That being said i can't blame anyone to be annoyed at this point. Devs have became increasingly bad at com in the last couple of months. Those status updates are a disaster lol. They should really hire or find someone for this.

I'm mostly enjoying this so far, but think there would be a lot more progress in the story if not for all the side-project/side-quest kind of stuff in the VN.

I think I'm in the midst of Chapter 4 right now - just learned Cassie's name ;) - and feel like this shouldn't be more than a prologue (train, train station, arrival at house - basically what I think must have been chapter 1) plus one more chapter - two at most - based on play time and progress. The dating app is a little bit of fun, but seems to be a waste of time, and the AI game is definitely a waste of time. So, I get the kvetching going on here because of the latest update. But, I'm a pirate, so my thoughts mean nothing. If I were a patron, I might be a little miffed given the development time to play time ratio - it's apparently a nearly four year old VN that has, what I'm guessing will be, about 8 hours of play time - maybe a little more if I try little more branching, but I already have about five of those I created trying to figure out some of the stuff I see in URM - added it in after seeing things apparently missed.

Another thing, and I think this is an issue with scrappy's Mod, is that the daydream sequence in Chapter 2 didn't open up naturally in the gallery, even though I fully played it through in every iteration I had saved. And, something I can't understand, is how a Dev or Modder can't get the names given to saves to be persistent. Sancho and a few others seemed to be able to do it, but no one else can, and I have to retype my save name every time. Not like it takes forever, but it can be an easily forgotten step if you're tired. Couple of other little things in the GUI have started to annoy me, too, but I'll get over those. Probably.

One thing I wish they'd done is allow for the quick menu to be toggled off - you can't get a clean screenshot of the "alternate view" renders by using the wheel click, like you can for other renders. In VNs that allow you to manually hide the quick menu, this isn't a problem; for the ones like this, if you want a clean copy of the render you have to Unren and track it down. Think I saw a universal add-in somewhere that might let me do it, but also might be able to find the option in URM...
