Patreon's TOS also doesn't force DC to give substantial updates. He could do only bug fixes for the foreseeable future like Cloud Meadow and he'd be right within TOS. But I'm talking about principle here. Summertime Saga wouldn't be possible without Patrons and he wouldn't be raking in the amount of money he does without them. Pretty easy, pretty simple. And where on patreon does it state that by becoming a patreon supporter somone is entitled to the finished project or telling a dev or team how to run their company, team or how they have to spend their money?
I can support whatever i want and if i don't like the direction a project is going i can simply stop supporting. Pretty easy. Pretty simple.
Yes people donate to support the project. And the support always increases when a release is approaching. But the game is free. You could spend 0$ a year and still get the game. I don't get all the arguing on how this project should be handled or who is entitled to something.
No one is entitled to shit just because they supported the game for a while. By that logic i would own innocent witches.
I don't think DC is necessarily doing something wrong but to claim that he owes no one anything is bullshit in my opinion. In his position I would freeze payments until the tech update is done, you know, out of good will. Or maybe don't put polls behind a paywall and make them public on Discord. He doesn't care about money so why wouldn't he?
This is just my opinion of course but I'd say it's a reasonable one.
