The eye that Shopkeep gives MC is the eye of Aglaecwif child. The eye that's bonded to MC is referred to as an Origin and is assumed to be an Arbiter. The set of missing gods above the Apostles. The Eye being Evolution, in this case. Evolution being Memory (4th Apostle) + Body (3rd Apostle).
so does keeping it and not giving the shopkeep eye to aglaecwif actually do anything?

Something interesting Nico mentions in this update is that all the strongest people in the Hero, and even outside of it, don’t rely only on getting stronger through straightforward evolutions. In her case, she has the Hexenringe, but she also says the other captains have similar special tools or mechanisms that boost their power.

So what would the MC have?

I keep thinking his main “tool” might be the memory abilities, but those don’t seem particularly useful for direct combat… Outside of that, he has some body modifications like the monster heart, certain absorptions, items from the shopkeeper, etc. But none of these feel like a concrete, defining power source. Honestly, the impression is that all of this just translates into stat boosts.

Ella definitely had abnormal things in her body to have that kind of overwhelming power.

So what do you think he could develop in the future beyond that?

I wouldn't say the memory stuff isn't useful in a fight, several times it saved his ass or made his life a lot easier to get an idea what his opponents are capable of. Also memory link is super useful for coordinating fights in a team setting. And at higher evolutions he may be able to do some of the other things that Syla did, who knows.

Probably just eat more monsters for the time being, until his Memory ability evolves. As is, just assimilating their physiology into his myriad forms has been enough to keep making him stronger even though Xanthe points out that he isn't able to assimilate their innate powers. It might be possible to do so with continued growth in Memory however, because we see the pinnacle of that ability with Syla manifesting other chosen in the fight against Indra. Since the twin trait is Evolution, you'd think that the inherent implication of survival and adaptability might manifest itself in ripping diluted versions of unique powers from what he consumes.
