I'm following the walktrought, but still can't understand how to access to the final challenge #2, any tips on that?
To gain access to that, your mental resistance must be 3 or lower and you must travel between planets. This will slowly raise an invisible stat (indoctrination) which tracks how much control you have lost thanks to ALICE.

Note that depending on various factors (like, difficulty setting, ship upgrades, traits and so on) you might need to have a lower mental resistance to increase this stat. You get short scenes during travels to let you know your indoctrination is raising when you hit 10, 20, and 30 points (40 points is a game over). You must have 30 indoctrination points or more to get final challenge #2, while challenge #3 triggers between 30 and 20, 20 included.

Just a quick heads up, this game is built on Rags 2.4.14, the best download of Rags needed to run it is 2.4.16. The original and almost all links to rags have been dead for years.

The solution for getting the right version of Rags I ran across is the internet wayback machine:

The file I think you'll want is the July 2019 snapshot of the rags 2.4.16 version. Clicking the snapshot date you want will give you a zip file with the downloader for Rags. Unzip the file, use the Rags setup windows installer, an install wizard pops up and I had to select I accept on the terms and conditions page. I left all the install things like location rags is installed to as the default options.

Once I got that version of Rags installed, simply double clicking on the Tales_of_the_Drunken_Cowboy_-_Chapter_1_1.0g file I was able to open the game and play it. Figured getting the right version of Rags to play this since it no longer a thing was difficult so I would post this for folks in the future.

Mind you, there is also an HTML conversion, so RAGS isn't mandatory anymore. It's a bit unusual (you need to use right-click even if it's an HTML file), but it works well, as far as I know.

Is the updated walkthrough still in the plans? I remember you mentioned it a year or so ago, but I can understand if you've dumped it since you're pretty busy with the sequel.

I haven't dumped it, but boy it's hard to make progress on it. I have been getting sick just about every month in the last 15 months, and it's making it hard to keep up with my current game, let alone find the time to work on my next one, or clean up the walkthrough for this one.

If you can't get RAGS to work, have you tried the HTML conversion? It's there specifically to avoid these problems.

Can you run other RAGS games just fine? Anyway here is a checklist of things to verify:

Hmmm. Is this game related to "Wife Trainer" or did they simply swipe the name?
It's not related, but it might be a tribute. I know he likes my game, but I can't remember if he specifically told me about this or not (a few people have asked if they could use the characters from the game over the years, there is even "Celeste Blake - The Evindium Affair" which is kind of a "what if?" alternate universe). What's the name used for in the game?

nice game too
i remember that dracis3d has plans to revive this game, but in the end nothing came of it
I am probably too busy with my own stuff, so I forgot about his plans to possibly revive the game. Dracis is going to help me with TOTDC 2 with testing and feedback, however (assuming he doesn't regret agreeing to that, given how slow I have been in finishing my current game XD).

Is it impossible to save in Joiplay? Everything works fine for me, but when I click the "SAVE GAME" button, nothing happens. However, the "LOAD GAME" button works as it should.

I never tried the RAGS version on android. Have you tried the HTML version, however? That might work out of the box without joiplay, but once again, it's not something I tested personally (I generally find phones too uncomfortable to use for most gaming).

Edit: nevermind, the HTML version doesn't seem to work on mobile.

I remember playing this game when it was first released on TFG, and having a good time with it (except some annoying puzzle towards the end).

As the author, you deserve triple praise : most importantly creating this gem of a game of course, but also dealing with the madness that is the RAGs engine and finally but not least providing continued support for *all* your games. I recall having to ask for help with the puzzle above, and you provided.

Anyway, it's good that the game also exists in HTML now and is featured in a prominent place on this site, so that more people can enjoy it.

Glad you enjoyed the game. ^_^

I didn't dislike RAGS as an engine too much, but I must admit some of the bugs and quirks were annoying, especially as a developer. I think helping players when they are stuck comes with the territory. I am a player myself, after all, it doesn't seem right to ignore questions when I know the answers (or I can dig them out of the game XD). Perhaps if I was super successful it would be hard to keep up, but I have never been THAT busy so far. Same deal for major bugs, it just feels wrong to leave them around once I know about them.

I am glad I got the help I needed to convert all my old games to HTML. They might not be the best adventures around, but I didn't want to leave them languishing just because RAGS is becoming a relic of the past. I wonder if I should post the other games here as well (currently they are on my blog, the Hypnopics Collective and the TFGames), although I can't imagine there being much interest for them at this point.

Well I'm sure you'll not be surprised by the huge number of abandoned (sometimes excellent) games on this site, comparatively to the number of finished games.

Most newbie authors just don't realize the amount of work (and time) it takes when they decide to add animations, HQ renders, engine reworks, yadada, and other much less valuable (at least to me) features to their games in the middle of their production cycle than focus on say the raw quality of the story, character development, user interface, a game loop that remains enjoyable from start to finish (no excessive grind, for example), not to mention of course technical support.

Having played an unreasonably large number of H-games by now, but my fun-time getting increasingly more limited, I value authors that know how to avoid such traps. Finishing a good game, able to stand the test of time like this one, takes experience I guess but also determination and talent.

The goal of my message was just to point this out, in the hope that more aspiring game creators will read this thread (among other sources), take example of what worked instead of blindly rushing into the fray, and miss the target. Our player community as a whole would surely benefit from it. And of course to send you my gratitude as player.

About your other games, I cannot decide for you, but I think that most players would be able to find them if they wanted to and if there was a reliable way to download them over time. Google-fu is strong, and no one should go out on the Internet without learning it in this time and age.

Please have a nice day.

This game reminds me of the old graphic adventures of the 90's, very immersive but a nightmare to play without a guide.

Already in the first mission I lost more than 20 minutes is on the 60th floor :HideThePain:, the first part of going W > S to find the dead guard took me 5 minutes to discover it and the rest I wasn't able to do. I had to look for the answer in the comments of this thread, it makes me angry to have to resort to a guide, but it's impossible otherwise.

The glasses "AI helper" is useless and the only message I get is "Criminal lords are so paranoid these days, aren't they?" :ROFLMAO:.
