Just fixed the problem (that I somehow got on other RenPy games as well).
For anyone that has this problem: Hold Shift while starting the game (it's kinda weird, and I can't get it to open every time). A screen with a few display options should come up. I changed 2 things, fps to 60, and Renderer to Angle/Direct X.

So far I had no further problems

Yeah, but it didn't cause any problems until now. Could 2 graphic cards be the cause of this? Anyway, I somehow fixed it, so it's all good now

it can be, game can switch to integrated (intel) which isn't opengl compatible and then game not working.

tried it out and if you save at the end of 1.6 then now that doesn't work, just ends....luckily I had one from about 5 clicks before that that loaded...so going to start in on the update now.

Has anyone seen a walkthough (just something giving the best outcomes). I've seen a Youtube one for 1.8....but it's like 45mins or more in multiple parts...so not sure if that is 1.8 or everything up to 1.8
