He isn't that smart... and his anger issues are his main problem tbh... instead of magic books with spell he can't use it might be time to read up on social norms and etiquette... especially if he's going to be the new lord after Agathon is agathgone...
Being a flamy boi is nice and all, but what he really needs is being on top of his politics.
MC has a long, long way too go.
Basically my point, well said. Even if he does just focus on the magic aspect he does have wives who could supplement his politics but honestly there's many ways this could go ^

I just think the MC isn't ready. Neither with his magic nor socially or politically.

He's not a bad guy, but he gets way too angry way too quickly over trivial things.
The thing is I don't think he is going to get the time he would need.
Shit is going to hit the fan and we can only hope he doesn't make the wrong choice.
Maybe Agathan's death will be the catalyst for the MC to "grow up" for lack of a better term.

I disagree on his magic. He's already far above average when it come to combat. The average mage is probably close of what we see with Persus, the teleportation specialist. He cast a couple wards, a spell like the magical pit, and he's out of juice.

The MC? He can sling fireballs all day long, or close. Already, that's quite powerful. And he has his Firestorm that can overwhelm most magical defenses. And he can move really fast due to his Spark. Add the illusion, and another ace in the hole not shown yet (the update after the next one), and you have what is a very powerfull battlemage. But, the other mage that is the most often shown is Athagan, and he' s OP.

No, only the really heavy hitters or surprise can get to him, really. A mundane person without magical defenses is nearly powerless against him, with a few exceptions like Sariel. And even the strong mages need to be very careful...

Now, what he doesn't have yet is versatility. He has nearly no utility spells, except for remote wards, and if he is one day against someone or something immune to fire he could have a hard time.

But you are spot-on when it comes to diplomacy. If he didn't have Athagan backing him up he could have been in hot waters. But he'll get there. I already added some of it to the story. To his defense, he just can't stand an asshole, but he's very good to decent people. It's just that he has a hard time to think of the consequences of his actions. He goes for what is right, damned the consequences. He'll have to adjust, or beomes so strong that it doesn't matter...

Well I was comparing him to Athagan of course, the only other mage so far that can actually do things that are more than wards and then is out of juice. ;)

That's good to hear. :)

That's a very dangerous path, probably the most dangerous one of them all.
Might makes right, but power ultimately corrupts. I hope the MC doesn't go down that path.

True. It will probably be a mix of the two to be honest, he will learn to let the little things go, but he will always stand up for what's right, from his point of view.

Besides, he was born poor, which helps in my experience. After all, it's not like he get angry for no reason, he was in the right. Well, nearly always, there the time when Maria was sick, but that's a special case. When his family is in danger, he doesn't give a flying fuck about the consequences.

I have a question for dev. will mc ever learn a word of power and if so, will it be more or less dangerous compared to when Athagan used it?

I suspect all words of power would be dangerous ... but the real answer is: If Vander believes in Chekov's Gun, then "Yes ..."

Well considering the MC has more arcane reserves then Athagan i'd say he might possibly also be able to speak a word of power, the only angle as to why he couldn't i can come up with is that Athagan is more efficient in using his arcane.

Efficiency is something one can train/improve ,probably the same could said about increasing ones reserves but to a lesser extend.
The MC has the potential to surpass Athagan ,as mentioned multiple times.
So can the MC use a word of power? i'd say : "not yet, sometime soon hopefully"
