Hey dev, no hate here, I looked at some of the images and videos, and in my opinion the remade barbarian's face looks... inferior. Is there a particular reason for the model change? Perhaps incompatibility? Or did you never really mean to make barbarian look the way she did in the first place?... and was more like "it is what it is"? Or am i just tripping
I do prefer the protagonist of the original game. This new one is nice but is not really rustling up my jimmies.

I don't understand the negativity yet. Not sure if i miss soemthing but the game is for a "Demo" pretty solid. I played the Unity one also and i have to say this one is on a very good track.

It's not a lot to do right now but seeing other dev posts it looks like we are in the state of "making the foundation and base mechanics". Thats a good approach to do it like this and later add the content.
The things which are already there are quite nice.

I just hope in the end or at some point there will be a "one time" support me (like buy it) instead of Patreon.
Part of the issue is people tend to dislike the instant remaking the previous game in a new engine thing. If it was billed more as a sequel or even prequel to the original game that'd be one thing, but what seems like redoing everything from scratch has often been a really bad sign for a monthly subscription based game developer.

So yeah, if this was a new game concept or the first game by a developer it'd likely be getting less negativity.

The new Torus fight is just absolute dogshit. Moveset of a whopping 1 barely telegraphed attack? Yep. No I-frames on dodge and wonky hitboxes? Yep. Boss is a sponge, but kills you in five hits no matter what? Yep. This kinda gives the whole "super hard japanese platformer with shitty pixel porn" vibes, but in a "shitty souls-like ARPG" sense, if you catch my drift. Either give me god mode, a way to skip boring mandatory shit, or fix the battle system. It is a pity, because I do not remember such problems in the first game (most likely because it had cheats, IIRC).

I have played the original Last Barbarian on around 3 occasions. When it initially came out, and two more times with about 1-2 years apart. Both times I enjoyed the game but it was buggy, had clunky combat and would often crash on me. This could have been an issue with my setup, but the experience wasn't the best. I still enjoyed what I played. Then life happened and I forgot about it until recently, when I saw the game here updated but now with "rebirth" in it's name.

I have however judged without playing the latest version of the original. So I'll give it a spin when I have time. But I expect the game to be finished and not "nearly". I still see the original being at "v0.9" instead of "v1.0" – Which is still impressive considering most games can't get past v0.1 let alone close to being finished. But when you're this deep into a game, why not just finish it and then move onto a new game? (Could be it's actually finished and just not marked as it, but I'm commenting before I've played it to completion.)

...there is only so much content you can put in a game before it becomes too bloated and too long winded to enjoy any further...
It's true that every game has a point of which it's past it's due-date. But if that's the case you wrap up and finish it. Not leave ship and start anew – especially when you're being paid for making said ship.

...everyone who has played it is more than ready to move on to a new game, with new content, in a new engine with new graphics...
...boredom of the same engine, same setting and same, now outdated graphics...
...perfect time to move on to a new engine and a new game...
...working on the same game...
...time to move on to new and exciting grounds...
...a remake/reboot/whatever it is is extremely desired for anyone who has played the original Last Barbarian...
I'd don't exactly see remaking the same game as "new grounds" or a new game, lol. I've also never said that the remake isn't looking good! I've seen the images and devposts, I am looking forward to playing this at a later date. But I'd rather see a game get marked as finished, then have the dev start a fresh new game that then shines because he can now use his experience from the old game to bring a new game to greater heights. But I understand that it's financially better for him to remake the game he all ready has supporters for. If he tries to make something vastly different he might lose support as it's not the kind of game they supported him for.

Anyhow, I wish the dev good luck and I hope he can make the game as he envision it.

Well based on below statement it does seem the dev intends to still finish the original first. It is quite close to finished already anyway, but personally I honestly wouldn't mind it being abandoned in favour of the new Unreal game as again it is already so long I really doubt most people here have finished the current build of the Unity game. I was being quite literal when I said 10-20 hours to see all current content

no I frames such yes, but use the SHIFT (sprint) attack it stuns him.. current builds content ends after the fight tho

I think that game is in very early stage. Especially, because Victor was always consistent with releaseas. It is a solid base which can be extended and tweaked as needed in the future. Let's see how it changes after 1-2 releases

Wow. I’ve been offline for a few days and now there’s so much hate directed at me
I'll try to answer some questions, if of course, anyone needs it. Because I got the impression that some players are simply unhappy that the developer is not doing things the way they want. However, I will try.

First. Game development takes a lot of time. Especially if there’s a war in your country, and you don’t have the ability to leave or find a completely safe place. Unfortunately, I can’t influence this, and my resources don’t allow me to fully avoid the consequences of frequent power outages (which makes my work impossible during such periods).
Anyway, I try to release content every month so that my supporters get updates regularly, not once every six months.

Second. About the original game. I haven’t abandoned it. But there will be no new content there (practically). Since the story is completed, I need to fix critical bugs and add the final scene. So, all future updates will likely be of a "technical".

Third. I don’t force anyone to subscribe to me. I don’t put up a paywall, I don’t cut content, and I don’t lock it behind protective scripts. Yes, patrons get updates faster than everyone else. If you consider this a 'milking' project, well, that’s your right. On this forum, you can always find tons of other projects that have a shorter development history

Fourth. Yes, this is based on the original story. But with a reimagining. The story undergoes changes compared to the original. Also, I don’t use old animations and I hardly use old assets for Rebirth. So, yes, it will be different game from the original version.

Fifth. I switched to UE only because Unity doesn't offer the possibilities that UE does. I spent a lot of time and money on assets in Unity, trying to get certain features, but honestly, the years spent developing in Unity, I remember as years of suffering and pain. I should have done this earlier.

I am grateful to everyone who has supported and continues to support the project, and I hope to meet your expectations for what Rebirth will become in the future.

Happy New Year 2025, btw!

I wouldn't focus so much on it. It's an anonymous forum with a bunch of people with different attitudes and opinions, and haters gonna hate.

That and the games section is a graveyard of abandoned and "abandoned" projects, so news of a re-imagining makes people suspicious. But, the regular updates are welcome and better than how most projects end up.

I'm sorry but what are you talking about?

Have you played the latest version of the original Last Barbarian? 6 years and massive massive massive amounts of content!

The original is more or less completely finished. Nothing is being thrown away and the new game be it a remake/reboot/whatever it is is extremely desired for anyone who has played the original Last Barbarian and finished all the content in the game
Is the plot complete? Main quest/storyline has concluded? If that is not the case, then it's not cool to forsake it just to go work on a new game. You are literally the first and only person I have seen actively praising a dev for abandoning a project for the sake of a new one(assuming the previous game is obviously not complete).

It doesn't matter how much content a game has, if it's half-baked and lacks a conclusion, most players won't be cool with the dev leaving it in that state. All that does is putting the dev's integrity into question on weather you can even trust them to make a full game in the future.

The main plot is complete. All quests are completed and have 2 or 3 endings. You can check them on discord server. The only things I need to do - is add final scene which doesn't have any H-event and needs just to put a dot in the story.

So I guess it's pretty normal to start new one. The game needs tech polish and fixes, and I don't want to add to original story some side quests just to expand release numbers.

As long as you actually get around to finishing the first game, I see no issue :) Problem is, I have seen so many devs start a new project right by the end of the previous one and they never actually go back to complete the previous project because they are all-in on the new one and it never actually gets finished. That annoys the hell outa me tbh.
