I remember when I posted here back when everything was still text based (think it was v42)... happy to see the game is doing well and not suprised people still bitching about "where are the animations and CGs?".

*checked last played version after being forced to update* ... 48.2?

...

My saves won't work now will they...

I hope so... I think going off my memory of my last play I had reached the where Simon's party encounted the woman who tried to blow them up for the 2nd time (and apparently has a death wish). With all the massive amounts of changes from the first versions I played (version 42.0-48.2), do you think it be better served for me to start over from the beginning?

I don't think any of the content you have played has changed.
But then again its not that far in so you might as well start over to get a good grip on the story again.

What you describe sounds like the beginning of chapter 2 and we are at chapter 5 currently. So you might as well start over to get a refresher, it's not that long to get were you were before.

>Selling Alcohol = 20k
>Robin Demon Summoning Problem = 5k
>Hilstara Corruption Mine = 20k
>Help Robin get her potion license and sell them = 5k
>Carina Stineford Slavers = 2.5k
>Orcent and Lucy = 5k
>Discover succubus tower and help starving succubus = 2.5k
That should give you 60k. Missed the tower or didn't help Carina.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I just got to the end of the latest update. Actual shivers when Simon is finally rescued from the IK prison and we see the launchscreen CG. Had to stop for a few seconds and just stare at the screen. The author clearly had a well laid out plan for the story from the very beginning.

Honestly can't remember the last time a game, any game, gave me that kind of 'holy fuck' moment. Now I'm kind of angry that I can't share this with any of my friends (for obvious reasons). Massive props to Sierra Lee.

tl;dr: It's all about the presentation, baby!

I wouldn't really describe TLS as a 'porn game' per se, but I do agree that it's got a lot more sexual content than most people would be comfortable with, especially when it comes to the heavily frontloaded earlier chapters. The type of sexual content might also be a turn-off for most people. I'm not ragging on other people here, mind you- I can certainly understand people being uncomfortable with the themes of consent (and its lack), for example. Hell, I'm not really comfortable with incest themes at certain points in the story, but that's just a me thing.

Honestly, I think the best way of presenting TLS would be in the form of a written Let's Play or summat of the sort (which I am actually planning to do if/when the game is finished, so I have more context on things), where the player and the audience can discuss the ideas and themes presented in the game between updates. After all, one thing that I think is easy to see from the finished-so-far product is how Sierra herself has evolved as a writer (not to mention scripter), and bringing people along that journey in a safe, guided environment might be the best way of sharing your enjoyment of the game and its themes.

That said, I think it might be an easier sell than most might think, especially if it's bolstered by an LP. I know it's easy to think that people would be turned off by the sexual content in the game, and that might have been so back in the late 90's and early 00's, when Concerned Parents' Groups™ and their ilk were protesting against everything that The Kids(also ™) liked. Now though? We have mainstream games like The Witcher, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Cyberpunk showing at least some degree of nudity and having some kind of sexual content, while in greater culture there are people all over who are fighting for the rights of marginalized groups like sex workers.

Really, the only truly objectionable sexual content (at least, in my opinion) in TLS is the stuff where informed consent is overidden (e.g. whoring Qum in Stineford, that one 'pet' of the Fucklord- holy shit everything about that guy infuriates me, not least because I was him 20+ years ago, aaargh). Which again, is why it would be important that someone who knows the game be there to act as a curator or guide and provide context, as opposed to chucking some poor newbies into the deep and and telling them "All right there buddy, enjoy the rapey bits! I know I did!". Sure, that may not be what you're telling them, but without some kind of the aforementioned context, that's what your victims will remember you saying.

The story, writing and the execution (finance + political themes) puts most triple-a RPGs to shame in my opinion.
Yeah the only games that have this kind of scale for the finance/political stuff are Civilization style games and those have no real story or writing to speak of. Other than that, the closest I've ever seen a main-stream game come is Dragon Age Inquisition and that's not even a fair comparison... for Inquisition. (even if I am in the minority who actually like the game for the most part)

Yeah I honestly think it is a real shame that this game is a porn game for this exact reason.

The story, writing and the execution (finance + political themes) puts most triple-a RPGs to shame in my opinion.
On that point, about story/writing, something I've grown to appreciate in stories with a large cast is managing to give each individual a fully realized and distinct personality, and allowing them to act in ways which are consistent with their motivations. I think it's an underappreciated part of world-building. This game does that quite well, IMO.

Yeah, this is something I stated playing this game way back when the only real sexual encounters were text-based and maybe a few images... I love interactive games like this where there is content and the point of the game is to PLAY IT, not something that's there for a quick yank. The characters all are well written and have depth to them, and there's a good amount of "realness" to the point no one feels like a throwaway character. Back then games like this and Renyuu: Ascension came to mind (although I really disliked the early plotline of the story). I also wanted to do an LP of the game, but I was still a novice at that kind to thing and worried about how to edit out the sexual content.

If there's a game that needs to be Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, it's this one.
