I'm very glad to hear that the Australia stories will be skipped. I did not much like most of the stories between Mutant Massacre and Second Genesis (start of the gold/blue teams).

After that, many people did not like the gold/blue teams era, but I did enjoy several stories, such as Second Genesis, X-Cutioner's Song, most of the Joe Madureira issues, and of course Age of Apocalypse. The quieter, taking-a-break issues of Scott Lobdell's run were also pretty good, in my opinion. So I hope that the game will include some of the gold/blue teams era material.

The Blue/Gold era has the problem of being associated with the Dark Age of Comics. On the one hand, you've got guys like Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio and Marc Silvestri at the absolute top of their game, working with Chris Claremont in the most wildly inventive period of the franchise since Claremont basically reinvented the series. On the other hand, you've got Rob Liefeld, Rob Lifelding it up all over the place and everyone trying to imitate him, directly leading into one of the worst periods of time to be a comics fan. It's easy to forget that there was once a time when the X-Men was the biggest name in comics - the pop cultural impact wasn't quite as big as Batman, Superman or Spider-Man, but in terms of sales, the relaunched series in '91 was consistently the top seller, month after month. That first issue is still the best-selling comic of all time at 8.2 million copies. These days, if a comic sells over 2-400k of a single issue, it's considered a runaway success. Granted, the comic industry is wildly different these days, the whole market was nearly destroyed in the mid-90s and it's only really recovered in the last decade. The movies helped a lot with that, but it's led to Marvel and DC being looked at more as farms for properties that can be made into movies and games.

At any rate, that 90s era is definitely the era I have the most nostalgia for: Onslaught, X-Cutioner's Song, Phalanx Covenant, AoA, all still really fun stories. And, of course, the 90s TV series, which was directly based on most of the early 90s stuff. Rereading it, it's very style-over-substance, but the art still gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling like nothing else.

I'm actually concerned over how we'd even do Age of Apocalypse. Since we're a sandbox game suddenly shifting the focus to an alternate reality would cause some narrative issues.

I mean I can imagine potentially a future side project focusing on a Null in that reality? Though we're gonna need to condense/cut some things to avoid extended visual novel length events.

I guess you're right, it'd be a challenge. But still... AoA versions of Rogue, Blink, Shadowcat? It would be such a treat.

You could always go the Rachel Summers route and have his mind transported into an alternate reality where he has to find out what caused the universe to turn bad/stop it from turning to begin with, or have him take the role of Bishop in that setting (an intro of weird shit happening, he thinks it's some kind of psychic attack or Science Reason, goes to bed, wakes up in the AoA because his power made him immune to the reality warp/time paradox/Other Science Reason) but honestly, if you're going that route, it'd be better to do it as a standalone game. I'm all for the drama and storytelling in a game like this, , but that's a narrative shift without the clutch.

I suggested earlier in the thread having short Danger Room Scenarios That Totally Aren't Based On Naughty Fanfic Pixie Found When She Googled Her Friends to unlock costumes for those designs. Rogue's more or less the same character in both universes, but Kitty has one of the biggest personality shifts between the two universes, so it'd be kinda jarring to have her show up.

That said, getting friendly with Classic 90s Jean and AoA Jean? Goth Rogue and AoA MILF Rogue? Drop me off in the reality where that can happen and smash the dimension-hopping machine, I'm never coming back.

That's really interesting. It's sorta of what game companies from the 90's turned into as well; the "farms for properties" is a really nice term, I'll adhere it into my vocabulary.

And, of course, the 90s TV series, which was directly based on most of the early 90s stuff. Rereading it, it's very style-over-substance, but the art still gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling like nothing else.
I've read a bit about the 90's series, I've sorta of liked what I read - the short descriptions made me curious at their executions, but what are you guys opinions on it?

I'm all for the drama and storytelling in a game like this, , but that's a narrative shift without the clutch.
You're killing it with the terminology. Also, yeah, that comic - it made me grin from ear to ear - is like a personal stab at me.

I suggested earlier in the thread having short Danger Room Scenarios (...) to unlock costumes for those designs.
That would be such a fun idea.

Easy, just have a glimpse of it as a particularly bad nightmare Null has. Maybe Null gets sick and has a bad fever.

Maybe Null doesn't get involved in some arcs that still happen. He honestly feels like an auxiliary or specialist guy brought in for situations where he is required. His defensive capability makes him a liability until his powers develop.

Wait, is Null some kinda psyker? Is that why Farouk is after him?

See those are all great ideas on how to execute it but it still breaks the sandbox. It' why we're not moving to the Bermuda Triangle or Australia.

We MAY open up San Francisco for awhile but y'all wanted a Sandbox and the team wants a sandbox. Suddenly shifting the sandbox in a way that restricts girls from showing up for more than a single semester/season isn't an option.

Though I will advocate for either DLC or a side project that's just AoA Null... Before they beat AoA like a dead horse. Like even the wiki is brief and missing citations for the later stuff.

Also what makes you think Rachel Summers won't be making an appearance? :sneaky:

We have plans for the Danger Room. ;)

We'll do more than that. Like the entire past segments will be presented. It's just during AoA, the X-Men comics took a major shift in showing several issues exclusively in this alternate timeline. With the original appearing very briefly or not at all.

Maybe Null doesn't get involved in some arcs that still happen. He honestly feels like an auxiliary or specialist guy brought in for situations where he is required. His defensive capability makes him a liability until his powers develop.
This. 100% this. For the most part unless it's a mission that can get you a lot of bonus points with girls by participating, you're gonna hear it second hand or maybe read about it in the news or on one of the campus' computers.

Wait, is Null some kinda psyker? Is that why Farouk is after him?
My knowledge on 40K lore is extremely limited but from what I know of psykers? ... Kinda?

I was tired and didn't address this

The Fall of the Mutants, Dissolution & Rebirth, Genoshan X-Tinction Agenda, and The Return of Professor X Eras will probably all be condensed into chapter 4? As well as Legacy Virus and Fatal Attractions being part of the finale. This will mean skimming a lot of it but we do want most of it to be canon to Earth-69.

Like Cameron Hodge is way too cool a villain to skip over. We need Bishop, Cable, and Stryfe to be a thing. The Horsemen of Apocalypse and Mister Sinister need to make their appearances.

We said the game was gonna end at Onslaught so the Acolytes need to show up and Xavier needs to shut down Magneto.

Some things will be lamp-shaded or cut entirely. If Dazzler is going to be a romance option then we can't have her disappearing into Mojoverse. Mojoverse probably won't be experienced by Null at all. I'll also state that yeah if Magik is a romance option then she's not gonna be deaged and die to the Legacy Virus.

As Shadow King is going to be a chapter 1 thing.(We're way too deep into it to have it not be) it's obvious that that's not gonna be a story adapted around this time.

As stated a million times in the past and will be stated a million times in the future. We're not gonna dedicate the game to fighting aliens every chapter so Return of Professor X will probably be heavily cut down or Null may not take part in the mission.

TL;DR A lot of it is really messy so expect the CliffsNotes of only the important bits. Lots of it will be DLC side quests. Keep in mind that this is a lot of maybes with nothing confirmed.

Keep in mind that I've been using a lot of ifs, maybes, and probably, so none of this is set in stone. Heck we may be willing to make these the longer semesters/seasons if we can justify all this happening over the course of a single year.

I meant psyker as a catch all term for mutants with mind powers. Psionics? Psychics?

I feel telepath has ended up doing too much heavy lifting. Also too many mutants have mind powers, not enough look like freaks.

A higher proportion of mutants with mental abilities makes sense. As humans, one of our defining physical aspects is the proportional size of our brains to our bodies, to the point where our brains are seven times the predicted size ratio. We're an intelligent species, we communicate, we formulate plans and share them through different means, we process information and retain it, we're self aware and the list goes on. Our biggest edge is that pink blob of jelly in our skulls. So it makes sense in a fictional world where genetic quirks can grant super strength or energy manipulation, then so would there a higher proportion of mutants with mental abilities, not just telepathy or telekinesis.

As for fugly mutants, I do remember one story back from when Marvel were doing the origin stories of the original 5 X-men, where Jean Grey encountered a mutant whose of empathic healing left him hideously scarred and deformed, as well as incredibly bitter. Anyway, by story's end, Jean had been severely injured and near death, only to be saved by this mutant at the cost of his own life.

bruh, suggestion for an event. At some point we need to go out on a mission and just get absolutely fuckin' bodied and then get nursed back to health by our x-girls.
The opposite would be nice as well, letting Null take care of his girls.

"Hey there, Medical Professional Null here to take your temperature and make sure you're doing well. Unfortunately, because the facilities blew up twice last week, your insurance doesn't cover the thermometer you'd put under your tongue. Its my meat thermometer and its going into your ass. Also, the insurance doesn't cover the lube anymore. So brace yourself!"

Eh I don't think Null will be running around like a Jedi so no worries.

Agreed for the stated reasons.
