I think you have to attack once, lose, and then proceed with the story ...

First you add a lockpick to the first box.
Then you rotate the little puzzle so that the 4-unit solution is in the framed (lower) row.

The combos are in the walkthrough if you forgot them from the dialogue

What are the gem combinations if you want to go back and repeat a scene? The Walkthrough does not mention them.

A "quick" fix could be to keep completed quests on a tab in the log.
